While many works of science fiction art often give us sleek spacecraft and shiny surfaces, it takes an extraordinary creative mind to give us something that seems futuristic yet lived-in. In his paintings, @bryanlarsenfineart does just this while also exploring the “optimism about the future and the timelessness of the human drive to explore and understand our universe.” In Ripples and Rings, Larsen shows us a slice-of-life moment on an off-world settlement. A gas giant bisected by the planet’s enormous rings rises above the concrete walls of the man-made compound. Meanwhile, a pair of young girls explore the world around them.

But here Larsen subverts expectations. We in the present would probably look up to marvel at the planets and the stars. But these girls are from the future. They probably get an up-close view of the planets every day. The expanse of stars above them is nothing unusual. These girls instead look down at the lily pads and the ripples in the water. They likely have never been to Earth, so they don’t know about the croaking of frogs and the hum of cicadas when walking by a lake on a summer evening. They do not know the sound of a breeze passing through a field of reeds or the boughs of trees. The wonders of the universe pass overhead, but the real exploration lies in looking at the little things.

‘Ripples and Rings’ by Bryan Larsen will be on display at Rehs Contemporary’s booth at the Newport Show in Middletown, Rhode Island, starting July 24th.
