INSIDE ISSUE 54 // "The women in Aneka’s paintings are not portraits of specific individuals but composite figures shaped by personal experience, family history, collective memory, and cultural narratives. Drawing inspiration from the women in her life as well as those encountered throughout history, mythology, and contemporary society, she creates allegorical characters that embody the diverse experiences, challenges, and aspirations of women across time. Through these imaginary protagonists, Aneka explores a distinctly female perspective, questioning persistent societal expectations that continue to marginalise women’s voices. Her work serves both as a means of understanding her own identity and as an investigation into the complexity of womanhood – depicting women not as archetypes, but as multifaceted individuals whose experiences continue to shape the world around them."

"In Virgil`s Aeneid, Aeneas and his men who fled the Troy reach the harpy island.
Men slaughter and feast on wild cattle that belonged to the bird-maidens. Enraged by their behaviour, Celaeno (the dark harpy) curses them. She says that Troyans will reach Italy, but until then, they will suffer from big famine."
