It’s July as I write to you, and as the days get shorter and colder I am so grateful to be able to share my life and home with three dogs now. There really is nothing better than snuggling on the lounge or in bed with a pile of puppies. That’s right – I have a little pack of puppies living with me! My 2 year old Golden Retriever boy, Winston, a 4 month old Golden girl, Freya and my best friend’s 8 year old Havenese boy, Pepper.
My best friend of over 30 years has recently moved from Sydney to country NSW for a much needed tree change and is living with us for the time being – what a wonderful treat it is to have her here with me!
Getting Winston, and then more recently Freya after the death of my first Golden, Monty, a couple of years ago, has really solidified my understanding of just how important the love and bond with dogs and more broadly pets is for our mental health. It is practically impossible to feel depressed when you are petting or cuddling your dog. Just the act of touching them releases serotonin in the brain and floods us with happy hormones.
The sensation of their fur against my skin, and the steady rhythm of their hearts beneath my hand, never fails to bring a profound sense of calm and serenity – one that nothing else quite matches. Time seems to slow when we’re fully present with another living being. In an age dominated by screens and endless scrolling, these quiet, grounding moments are exactly what we need to nourish our mental well being.

Watching three dogs play, explore, eat and snuggle together every day brings me so much joy! Having a baby puppy again is so sweet – she is so little, and squishy, and trusting, and full of love for everyone. She has also really helped Winston come out of his shell – I call Freya Winston’s emotional support squishy! But I think all dogs are emotional supports to us humans.
A dog’s love and devotion is different from any other love because it is innocent and completely pure – and this love touches a place deep inside of our hearts and minds, and makes us feel seen, chosen, and, with time, healed. I am so grateful for the love of dogs!
They are fellow mammals with thoughts, feelings and desires of their own – and what a wonderful privilege it is to be loved so unconditionally by them. Their love and devotion is different from any other love because it is innocent and completely pure – and this love touches a place deep inside of our hearts and minds, and makes us feel seen, chosen, and, with time, healed. I am so grateful for the love of dogs! Are you a pet parent?
