Down the rabbit hole: ‘Fables and Folklore’ at Nanny Goat Gallery

If you missed the recent exhibitions by Nanny Goat Gallery, do not fear! Their next group exhibition prepares to alight the mind with a whole new selection of original artworks as they get ready for ‘Fables and Folklore’, featuring over 35 specially selected artists who have been preparing a diverse selection of sculptures and paintings for this show over the past year. But what, exactly, are ‘fables’ and ‘folklore’? For gallery owners Emily and Paul Eccles, they focus on stories of morals and tradition passed down through generations. These tales, sometimes based loosely in truth, teach a lesson to their listeners. “For me, fables are a compass.” explains Emily. The tale of Robin Hood has been her favourite folklore since childhood, while The Boy Who Cried Wolf taught her important life lessons from an early age too.

For this exhibition, Nanny Goat Gallery unveils a selection of works exploring fables and folklore from multiple cultures around the world, through 2D and 3D forms. The show delves into how each artist connects with tales from the ages, inviting us to see a host of well-known, and lesser-known, characters in a new light.

“I’m really excited for this show. It seems like a timeless theme with so many areas of interpretation for the artists to really go crazy with. I have always favoured narrative art and so what better theme than fables and folklore which are, in essence, stories!

When curating this show, I specifically sought out artists who have a passion for storytelling in their work. We have a number of artists from around the world who also chose fables or folkloric tales from their corner of the globe, making this a very interesting exhibition, visually and narratively. ”

Why “Nanny Goat” Gallery?

During the 1940s to the 1960s, spanning three generations, members of Emily Eccles’ family resided on a picturesque hill in San Francisco affectionately referred to as Nanny Goat Hill. Memories of her family home evoke tales of its humble beginnings; the transformations it underwent, and the countless cherished moments shared within its walls—abundant laughter mingled with the occasional challenge.

Fast forward to today, and Emily’s journey, with her husband and gallery co-owner Paul, continues with the establishment of their gallery in Petaluma, nestled just 20 miles north of the vibrant city. This endeavor is truly a family affair, with each member contributing their unique expertise: Emily’s husband brings his skills in technology and law to the table, and Emily’s mom lends her financial acumen as CPA.

Yet, even in this modern venture, the spirits of her beloved grandmother and great-grandmother seem to linger, weaving their legacy into every aspect of their endeavor – an element that fills Emily Eccles’ heart with profound joy.
