Joe Vaux is a Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into his practice and experiences as he responds to the questions below:

  • What moment made you claim the title ‘artist’?
  • What Is something you wish people understood better when looking at your art?
  • Some people view art as a luxury, what would your response to them be?
  • What roles do galleries have in supporting the arts, or do you think galleries become obsolete in the future?

What moment made you claim the title ‘artist’?

It was the time in high school when big questions were asked. What do you want to do when you grow up? What inspires you? I was a good student, a hard worker, not necessarily brilliant. I liked science, but I loved making stuff. Sitting in my room, filled with constructions, movie posters, comics and VHS tapes, a bell rang in my head. It was so obvious,  it’s stupid. I want to be an artist. I want to make images and tell stories. Those are the things that make me happy.

What I something you wish people understood better when looking at your art?

HA! I want people to understand, that I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I wing it every time I start a new work. Making art has always been like wrestling, for me. (I’ve never wrestled) I just throw a bunch of paint out and attack. I just want viewers to have an adventure and maybe transport them to a time in their lives when imagination was king/queen.

Some people view art as a luxury, what would your response to them be?

I guess, I’d agree. It’s expensive to collect art and times are tough right now for a lot of folks. (Big Biz is squeezing the life out of us. Stupid creeps) I’m all about supporting artists and doing my best to be a positive force in the community. When I purchase a piece, I do it because: I know it will make me happy, I know it will bring a light to an artist’s day, and it helps the gallery keep doing its thing. Buy some art! Maybe you’ll be investing in the next Vinny Picasso.

What roles do galleries have in supporting the arts, or do you think galleries become obsolete in the future?

Galleries host art openings, advertise their art events, spread the word to their collectors and open doors for the next gen of talent. All the folks I’ve worked with are amazing and super supportive. Gallery spaces are magical. Going to an opening, meeting the artist and celebrating that artist’s work is truly inspiring.
