A Note From the Editor: We are a way for the universe to know itself

WWelcome to the 51st issue of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, with Erik Thor Sandberg’s wild painting Correspondence on the cover. I think we creatives can all agree that the world is feeling more and more wild lately – and not in a good way! To me, this cover seeks to reveal the different aspects of our psyches. We all have the potential for goodness, empathy, compassion, and we also all have the capacity for hatred and violence. Perhaps it is time for us all to look more closely at these parts of ourselves and ask: who do I want to be, which parts of my psyche do I want to feed so they can grow?

“Who do I want to be, which parts of my psyche do I want to feed so they can grow?”

We can all move through this life with more compassion, more kindness, caring, and empathy – and that is exactly what our world needs right now! Both for all the people who are suffering and of course for our planet and all of its creatures. Remember we are all connected – we are all made of star stuff! As the late Carl Sagan [astronomer, planetary scientist and science communicator] said “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” So let us look inward and seek to know ourselves better, and choose the path of love.

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” So let us look inward and seek to know ourselves better, and choose the path of love.”

When you read this our exhibition Reverie, at Haven Gallery in Northport, New York, will have closed, however you can see all of the exceptional works online via their website. This exhibition is our 20th in 12 years – including both commercial and museum exhibitions – and our fifth with the prestigious Haven Gallery. I am incredibly proud of the work for this exhibition, and all of the artists involved! Over 70 artists from around the world have created the most remarkable works in an array of mediums, including painting, drawing, fine art photography, etching, sculpture, and digital painting.

This exhibition, of course, also includes the winners of the 2025 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize, some of who have exhibited their winning artworks and others that have created new work especially for this exhibition. If you are looking for a wonderful gift for your art loving friends these holidays there may still be some work available from the Reverie exhibition, so please do take a moment to have a look at the exhibition online via the gallery website (havengallery.com).

Speaking of Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Winners, you will find a special editorial highlighting all of the Winners across all Award categories, including the Honourable Mentions, inside this issue, plus of course an in-depth interview with the Grand Prize Winners Xavier Escala & Nina Murashkina – their collaborative practice is fascinating! I’m sure you will enjoy learning more about it.
