Have you ever wondered who or what was living in that old, abandoned house you pass on your way to work every day? Or if there might still be someone living in that dilapidated shed hidden in the forest? There’s something fascinating about abandoned places: it might just be our imagination, or it could be the stories we’re fed through folklore, fairy tales and scary films.
Austrian photographer Matthias Lueger isn’t easily scared. Fascinated by the stories hidden in abandoned places, he takes his camera on ‘exploring trips’ through places everybody else seems to have forgotten.
The encounters Matthias has in these creepy places aren’t for the faint of heart! Ghosts, goddesses and demons are hidden in the dramatic dark shadows of his photos, obscuring themselves from our view. He has only been photographing since 2014, and it’s amazing to see how many beautiful shots he has already captured. His photos are tiny ghost stories, shot in striking black and white to emphasize the beings hidden in the shadow. As there are many forgotten mansions, castles, and hideouts hidden in the forests and mountains of Central Europe, I’m eager to see what stories Matthias is discovering and sharing with us next.
