Recycling Humanity: Hikari Shimoda @ Corey Helford Gallery

Hikari Shimoda is a Japanese artist who is known for her pop-culture-inspired paintings of youthful characters with mesmerizing eyes. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing her about her works, inspirations, philosophy, and current exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery. The original interview is conducted in Japanese, and for the sake of clarity, I opt to convey the sense of the text instead of doing a word-for-word translation.

最近、私は下田ひかりをインタビューする機会に恵まれました。下田ひかりは鑑賞者の心を引き付ける子供の目を描き、ポップカルチャーから影響を受けたアーティストです。彼女の個展,はRecycling Humanityと題した作品が Corey Helford Gallery にて開催されています。

Will you tell me the what ‘Recycling Humanity’ means and how you came up with this theme?

The theme of this exhibition is ‘the repetition of human karma’ and ‘the collapse of human race’. To me, through reincarnation, people’s souls are recycled and placed into new bodies. Unfortunately, even though they’ve been granted another fresh start, people never stop repeating the same transgressions in their next lives. Aside from those themes, some of the paintings in this exhibition are also inspired by Walter Benjamin’s thesis on Paul Klee’s ‘Angelus Novus‘.

今回の展示会のコンセプトは何ですか？またどのようにしてそのコンセプトを思いつかれましたか？インスピレーションになったものなどあるならば教えてください。インスピレーションになったものなどあるならば教えてください。

今回のテーマは「繰り返す人間の業」です。「輪廻転生」を「リサイクル」と表しています。人間は生まれ変わっても同じ罪を繰り返す、という内容です。また、ここ数年は「人類の滅亡」を大きなテーマとして扱っていますが、今回はヴァルター・ベンヤミンの「歴史の天使」からインスピレーションを得た作品も展示されています。

Among all of the artworks in this exhibition, which painting means the most to you?

It is very difficult question. But, if I must to choose, I would say, ‘The Angel of History’ (above). But I’m equally attached to all of the paintings in this exhibition.

展示会に出された絵の中で一番個人的に気に入っているのはどれですか？

非常に難しい質問です。あえて挙げるなら「歴史の天使」でしょうか(上記の絵）。しかしどれにも同じように思い入れがあります。

You are well known for your usage of pastel colors and portraits of youthful characters with enthralling mismatched eyes. Will you tell me how you developed your highly recognizable painting style?

I used to paint portraits of people with normal face. But, at the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku (Northeastern Japan) Earthquake and Tsunami, I changed the style and the subject matters of my works. Even though the earthquake and tsunami did not destroy my house, I saw the massive destruction the earthquake and tsunami caused via television. The fact that people in Fukushima were dying while I was alive and safe in my own house affects me greatly.

The Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown alters the way I see things. I remember watching television commercials that stress the safety of nuclear power plants and the environmentally friendly energy they create. But, after the earthquake, I came to see nuclear power plants as things that can threaten our lives.

This world is filled with polar opposites. Darkness do co-exist with light. So does life with death. And, The Truth lies in between all of the polar opposites. Those are the things I would like to express through my works.

ユニークな描き方で知られていると思うのですが、（特に子供のポートレート、パステルカラーの色使い、きらきらとした星が描かれた目、左右の色が異なる目等）どうやって今のスタイルにたどり着きましたか？　以前と描き方に違いが見られますが、何かきっかけ等エピソードがありましたら教えて下さい。

以前は普通の人間の顔を描いていました。今のスタイルになったのは2011年の日本で発生した東日本大震災が大きなきっかけの一つです。震災が発生した時、私の住居は被害がなく安全でした。しかしテレビの向こうではリアルタイムで津波で飲み込まれる街が映し出されていました。今死んで行く人々がいる、同時に平穏に生きている自分。愕然としました。同時に発生した福島の原発事故も私の意識を変えました。なぜなら、ほんの直前まで、原発は安全で環境に優しいとCMが流れていたのに、事故から一転、私たちの命を脅かす存在になったのです。

この世界は明と暗、生と死が同時に存在していて、全ては対極する物事で構成されている。極と極の中央に現れるもの、それこそが真実なのだと、その事を私は表現したいのだとその時に気がつきました。

I can see a huge difference between your previous and current painting style. Will you tell me more about the shift?

Back then, I wasn’t quite satisfied with my painting style. It’s not the way I’d like to paint my works. Also, I was unable to come up with strong and clear concepts for my projects. But, the great earthquake in the Northeastern Japan makes me to want to paint the essence of the world. Around the same time, I also decided to reference the anime and manga I like. And, finally, the theme and painting style I’d like to incorporate finally come together. I still remember the strong feeling that comes with the realization that this is what I really want to do!

I believe in the necessity of adding some dark and negative elements to a bright and peaceful painting. Without the contrast, none of them would be as vivid. I use pastel colors to represent peacefulness and positivity. Also, I use pastel colors to mimic the aesthetic style of anime and manga. Conversely, I use negative facial expressions, hollow eyes, dying animals, and words like “wanna die” to convey hopelessness and mortality.

その頃私は自分のそれまでのスタイルに違和感を持っていました。「これではない」という違和感が大きかったのです。また、制作のコンセプトについても核たるものを掴めずにいました。しかし、震災をきっかけとして、この世界の本質を描く事を決め、同時に自分が元々好きだった漫画やアニメの画風を取り入れる事で、テーマと表現が合致しました。「私が本当にやりたい事はこれだったんだ！」と思った事を覚えています。

平和や光などポジティブなイメージはパステルの色使い、漫画やアニメ的な絵柄に表れ、その反対の死や絶望といったネガティブなイメージは表情や目の描き方、背景で死んでゆくウサギのキャラクター、「死にたい」といった言葉で表されています。ネガティブ、シリアスな要素はそれを直接描いても意図する事が伝わらない事があり、逆にそういった事を浮き上がらせるためにポジティブな要素が必要だとも考えました。

Do the stars inside of the characters’ eyes symbolize anything? How about those horns on their heads?

The stars in their eyes represent ‘light’. They are also my attempt to remove as much humanity from them as well. The horns, on the other hand, represent the dark feelings they have to repress.

子供の星の入った目、頭に生えた角には何か象徴的な意味はありますか？

目の星は前述した明と暗の「明」の部分です。また、人間らしさを極力まで排除した結果の表現でもあります。角は「言葉にできない、口では言えない負の感情」が角の形となって生えてくるイメージです。

What led you to decide to become an artist?

When I was young, I wanted to become an Illustrator. And so, I went to an illustration school. But, as I was working on my assignments, I became aware that I’m not cut out for creating the things other people want me to draw and paint. Instead, I am much better at coming up with my own themes and paint them accordingly. The fact that I successfully sold some of my paintings also strengthened my decision to become an artist.

何が理由でアーティストになろうと決断しましたか？

私は当初、絵を仕事とするためにイラストレーターを志望していて、イラストレーションの学校に通ったのですが、課題をこなすうち、依頼を請けて絵を描く事に全く適正がない事が判明しました。逆に自分自身でテーマを考え、作品を作る事が向いていると考え、展示で絵が売れた事もあり、アーティストになる事を決断

To you, what’s the most important thing in life?

To keep on thinking and growing.

人生において最も大切なことは何だと思いますか？

考え続け、変化していく事だと思います。

What is art to you?

It’s a way to form my own philosophy and to deliver messages to others.

ズバリあなたにとってアートとは何ですか？

自分の思想を形にし、他人に伝えるものです。

I read that – someday – you’d love to collaborate with musicians and fashion brands. Is there any specific musician or designer you’d like to collaborate with?

I’m a longtime Bjork fan, and I dream to collaborate with her someday.

ミュージシャンやファッションアーティストとコラボレーションしてみたいとのことですが、将来、特に一緒にやってみたいと思う方はいらしゃいますか？

昔からbjorkのファンで、bjorkと一緒に仕事をするのが夢の一つです。

What are the things you have in mind when you are working on a project?

Every time I start to work on a new project, I always look forward to challenge myself (e.g. to incorporate new color schemes, to combine new motifs, techniques, themes, etc). These new challenges are the things that push me to keep on painting and drawing.

絵を描く上で心がけていることはありますか？

毎回何かしら新しいチャレンジをする事です。それは色使いやモチーフの組み合わせやテクニック的な事、テーマまで様々ですが、新しい事をし続けなければ、私は描き続ける事ができません。

What are the most important aspects of your paintings some art enthusiasts might fail to notice?

My works revolve around the concepts of polar opposites and ‘two sides of the same coins’. On my bright and colorful paintings, for example, you will always see something dark and negative as well.

ディーティルや絵の中のメッセージで見逃してしまいそうな部分だけれど、是非気づいて欲しいと思うところなどありますか？

前述のように、私は作品に「対極」「裏表」といったものを盛り込んでいます。例えば可愛くポップな色使いやモチーフがある場合、その反対のテーマやイメージが内包されています。「かならず反対の意味がある」その点に注意して作品を見てもらうと、より深く理解できるのではないかと思います。

What are your current projects? When and where are your next exhibitions going to be held?

This February, I will participate in the “Below the Surface Group Show” at Corey Helford Gallery and “JAPAN POP ART” group exhibition at Deodato Arte Milan.

今現在、取り組んでいる作品はありますか？　近いうちにまた展示会を行う予定はありありますか？

今は２月にCorey Helford Galleryで開催されるグループ展「Below the Surface Group Show」の作品を制作しています。また、現在イタリアのDeodato Arte Milanでグループ展「JAPAN POP ART」が開催中です。
