Karla Pereira: Princesses and Warriors @ Copro Gallery

There is always a wonderful glow emitting from Karla Pereira’s characters. It’s not only the large, signature-style eyes which draw your attention. Her appreciation for complimenting colour palettes swathe her enigmatic females in rich colour schemes often based in nature’s shades, complimented with pops of mouth-watering pigment. So when I heard that Karla was working on a new series of paintings for her debut solo show at Copro Gallery, I was excited. Even more so when I learned that she was turning her gaze to re-imagine our childhood princesses.

Karla Pereira’s upcoming solo show at Copro Gallery, Princesses and Warriors, shares the versions of famous fictional royalty that she would have liked to see in movies and books when she was a child. Each painting is fitted with its very own extravagant frame. Stepping confidently away from the mere title of ‘Princess’, each of Karla’s characters represent so much more. Independent and powerful, her princesses are warriors in their own right. And why settle for being just one or the other, when each female has the potential to be both?
