Interview with Zoe Lacchei

It is often difficult to communicate and convey emotions, especially when insulation turns into a perfect scream. Italian artist, Zoe Lacchei allows herself to be loved through a majestic silence composed of beauty, purity, delicacy, and fatality. Rome is not the only scenery for her art but also an ally, a place that fosters opportunities. Inspiration is everywhere and instinct is a praiseworthy reality for a brilliant mind. Zoe is the perfect strategy of lines lost to excess, a fantasy reborn.

Femininity is an attraction for few but many are devoted to it. There is no shame in waiting and no wonder in the claim, but only the need to shape fine rhythms and turn them into dreams. Zoe lives her life with elegance that few are able to boast, and meeting such a deep soul is an enjoyable encounter. Her works represent the transformation of a meaning so great that fear bows down to power. No depiction is the same, and each time the idea affects the tone until it breaks.

Zoe is a participating artist in ‘Aestheticism’, a beautiful.bizarre group exhibition at Vanilla Gallery in Tokyo, curated by Editor-in-Chief Danijela Krha.

Opening Reception: 5- 7pm | April 9, 2016
Exhibition Dates: April 4– April 23, 2016

Art is a continuous harmony between finding and depicting, where the senses are precious. What is your relationship with signs and colours?

Creating an illustration, an image, which catches the eye is a complex undertaking. My aim is to make the gaze dance, to enable viewers to entertain themselves with the part of me that’s in my drawings. Over the years, I have changed how I deal with colour. Initially, I was obsessed by it… by its brilliance, its substantiality, but then I realized that it was preventing me from achieving some effects of volume that I craved.

I moved on to black and white, using a warm ivory coloured paper that allows me to make the figures more physical and more substantial, as if the card were the skin itself. Monochrome is captivating and elegant. Just recently, I’ve started adding touches of bright, vibrant colour, to better emphasize specific emotions.

Gaze and sensuality are key elements in your work. How do you capture emotions?

Sensuality is part of life and seduction is a weapon created by nature for attracting or becoming predators or victims. The gaze is a language without words, which is often used by those who cannot say everything they would like to. I am privileged in that I use ‘my women’ to portray hidden and unspeakable desires. I reveal myself without undressing and I find it exciting when those who stop to examine my work figure out my messages. Conveying an emotion takes strength of passion and desire. That’s why, in order to hit the mark and intrigue the viewer, I put my emotions, my fears and my darkest fantasies into play.

What is beauty to you?

Beauty is a responsibility that few know how to manage. You can possess beauty or fall prey to it, but one thing’s for sure is that there’s no escaping from it. When the beauty of others catches you, it’s like experiencing a moment in time that seems to last forever. Your gaze focuses, your heart leaps, your breathing becomes deeper… and beauty is always desire. The great tragedy of being slaves to others’ beauty is that you are completely at the mercy of the other person, who is often cruel because he or she can have everything. Beauty can be the most inviting trap but seeing it fade is the most sadistic torture.

Tell me about the fusion and unison between human and animal.

My starting point is that nature is perfect while humans do everything they can to distance themselves from it. Animals feel pure emotions while man is ‘artifice’. The latter, although more complex than an animal, has over time lost everything that made him ‘true and spiritual’ and replaced it with fake values, fake emotions, fake needs. Human beings are creatures capable of cruelty, scheming, and intrigue. I often use a female figure and an animal in the same image precisely to depict the negative sides of women, and their inherent insidiousness, in contrast with the frailty and innocence of everything that isn’t human.

What is your relationship with Japan? You are participating in the group exhibition ‘Aestheticism’, curated by beautiful.bizarre Editor-in-Chief, Danijela Krha, at Vanilla Gallery in Tokyo. Tell us about this collaboration.

Japan is my home away from home; it’s where my heart is. Despite being born in Italy, I’ve never felt like I fit in and I’ve never had a feeling of belonging to this country. My dream is to reach Japan, which I see as the final destination of my artistic and personal journey. It’s a tough road to take because it’s the only place in the world where ‘excellence’ is judged at the highest level. Improving requires personal sacrifice, dedication, and strength of spirit. In April, I’ll take part in my first group show in Tokyo thanks to the ‘Aestheticism’ exhibition, curated by beautiful.bizarre in collaboration with Vanilla Gallery. This exhibition means everything to me. I’m honored, excited and genuinely moved by it but I know I have to do more and give more to earn the respect of the Japanese market. I’ll do everything to realize my dream.

Is Marilyn Manson an idol who has inspired you, or something else?

Marilyn Manson was the only person who believed in me at a time when nobody else wanted to. A lot of who I am today is due to him, because I used to be just ‘a creature without a voice’. Depicting his visual evolution gave me the chance to hone my skills and got me noticed in the art world. I will always be grateful for his kindness and generosity and I will never stop thinking of him as an idol as well as a good friend.

What is your relationship with skin, and how do you feel about drawing it?

That’s a very interesting question as I can interpret it in two ways. As an illustrator, I have often drawn ‘the skin’ of the characters that I depict and in this sense, it was through the skin that I portrayed the carnality of their thoughts and their sins. Soon my career will cross into the tattoo world, and in 2016, I’ll officially start ‘drawing on human skin’. This is an interesting new challenge that will affect my personal life because I’m used to privacy and intense solitude and the idea of having to physically interact with others’ bodies intrigues me and excites me.

Tattoo artists are accustomed to the idea of ‘touching’ strangers, hearing their stories and making them bleed, but for me entering this new world will certainly have a strong emotional impact and I don’t know where it will lead me. I hope that I’ll make everyone who entrusts their skin to me happy.

A long journey is not always destiny. Do you believe in chance?

I believe in chance and in luck, two elements that man has no control over but have the ability to change the course of our lives. Beyond our abilities and our intentions there is a force that transcends everything else that pushes us in the right direction even when we don’t yet know where we’re going.

What have you learnt so far and what do you still want to find out?

I’m not sure I’ve understood much because everything that is understandable is only so because it has practical implications. Life is so complex and varied that I’m sure that my ideas will still be unclear when I reach the end of my time on earth. Living is learning and discovering is the most intriguing part of life… and I just want to find out more.

Zoe_Lacchei_beautifulbizarre_007

Where do you find refuge?

I have more than one refuge. I have curiosity, which leads me to knowledge. I have passion, which leads me to ecstasy. I have imagination, which sets me free. No refuge outside our mind is truly a safe haven.

Your works have no boundaries but reveal a reserved manner and a desire to take risks. Do you think it is important to push ourselves further to change our view of things?

Pushing yourself further is the basis of evolution and is an absolute concept applicable in every context, from nature to science, from humans to animals. Everyone who has gone down in history as an innovator has done so because they surpassed the allowed limits… they broke the rules and they imagined the unimaginable. From time to time in my work I try to be more daring, I try to dig deeper, I try to delve into my ‘darkest depths’, but only the viewer can judge whether I achieved my aim and whether I really managed to show something that hasn’t been seen before.

Eroticism is often a shadow but the truth is that it’s a cry absorbed in actions. Your art contains very strong erotic visions, a visceral beauty which is difficult to grasp. What do other people think of your work?

Anyone doing a job like mine eventually understands that what others take away from your work isn’t only the message that you explicitly wanted to convey, but that the same image can elicit different reactions depending on the viewer. What emerges is a kind of Rorschach blot test. The personality, psyche and history of ‘the observing subject’ influence their interpretation of ‘the object observed’. I find it wonderful! There are people who look at my works only ‘on the surface’, without going too deeply into the symbols or meaning behind what they see, but there are others who are shrewder, more thoughtful and more curious, and who succeed in going deeper and in seizing the emotion beyond the image. The two reactions I would prefer are inconsequential, since both groups give me the great gift of pausing to look at what I do and share it and make it theirs.

Is happiness a dance?

Happiness is a waltz! It’s a swirl of the passions and emotions that you chase throughout your lifetime! The fuller your dance card is of experiences, people and events, the more intense your happiness is and the more rewarding life will be, right up until the moment when the last name – Death – is added to the list.
