As part of the epic BRITWEEK, Copro Gallery is exhibiting a very special solo show by the eclectically British artist RYCA, ‘ROUGH WITH THE SMOOTH’. Known for his Brit humour and enthralling love of Star Wars, RYCA will be exhibiting a ‘cross-over’ of two of his most prevalent pathways, displaying the best in his Star Wars Iconography and playfully re-designed traditional pub signs under one roof.
RYCA | ROUGH WITH THE SMOOTH
Exhibition Dates:
April 25, 2015 – May 16, 2015
Copro Gallery
2525 Michigan Ave. T5
Santa Monica, CA 90404
Bringing a dash of film geek suave, RYCA – otherwise known as Ryan Callanan – has spent his days merging well known influences such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein with, ultimately, Star Wars references. Already a prominent figure on the street art scene and continuing to draw in audiences around the world, RYCA’s synthesized artworks emanate a witty and captivating blend, rejuvenating well-known characteristics with a borderline whimsical personal touch. His works have not stopped there, however, as RYCA has continued to develop his skills in industrial model making and 3D design to bring a level of craftsmanship that is honourably out of this world. Zen Trooper, anyone?
This level of personal creation has evolved RYCA’s imagination, contributing to an artistic reflection on everyday familiarity within British culture. His main response has been focused around one of Britain’s most well-known customary displays: the good old pub sign, and with a sizable batch of British humor, RYCA has effortlessly subverted this traditional landmark. Using it as a base to explore colloquial words, quotes and song lyrics personal to his youth, his signs bring this subconsciously absorbed item back to the forefront of attention.
‘ROUGH WITH THE SMOOTH’ is a forefront exhibition in rejuvenating the lost art of sign writing, whilst maintaining RYCA’s personal integrity to continually represent his own inner passions.
