Hera Mysterium is the pseudonym of a Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist, meaning “Lady Mystery” in Latin. As a child, she attended an art studio where she learned to express her imagination and found inspiration in the works of Frank Frazetta. While she admires many artists, Frazetta particularly influenced her with his ability to bring to life scenes of battles, fierce warriors, and stunning women with unparalleled intensity. This is the type of legacy that Hera aspires to leave behind.
Unfortunately, in the past, Hera allowed others’ opinions to affect her and prioritized things that were not right for her, which led her to abandon art for almost a decade. However, in April 2021, she decided to start creating again. At first, she felt rusty after years away from her craft and had to teach herself all over again. Nevertheless, she persevered and has been exploring various mediums ever since.
Hera Mysterium is determined to leave a unique and beautiful mark on the world. With a touch of the macabre and a penchant for the surreal, her work delves into a world where darkness and beauty intertwine. “I want to evoke a sense of unease and fascination in anyone who experiences my art”.
Many of Hera Mysterium’s artworks celebrate the strength, resilience, and beauty of the feminine spirit. Her subjects range from powerful goddesses and witches to sirens, embodying themes of female empowerment and autonomy. In some instances, she tells the sad stories of women’s lives. She often explores the depths of the human psyche, tackling themes of dreams, nightmares, and the subconscious mind. Mortality, transformation, and transcendence are also key interests for her, which she incorporates into her work from time to time. She examines the cycle of life and death, the passage of time, and the journey of the soul beyond the physical realm, all while expressing her enduring love for mythology.
Hera uses various mediums, including acrylics, oils, watercolors, charcoal, ink, photography and digital painting. She enjoys mixing things up by adding melted candle wax and dried roses to her creations, humorously noting that “ruining your floors and carpets can be so much fun.”
“My artwork is created with deep emotion, exploring the complexities of dualism—darkness and light, horror and delight, good and evil. After all, one cannot exist without the other”.
