Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Issue 47

Inside this Issue, we discover the captivating work of Felicia Feldman, who captures the essence of the divine feminine. Her paintings depict all the beauty and strength of what it means to be a woman and walk amongst nature in peace and harmony.

We also delve into the intricate assemblage sculptures of Kris Kuksi. These otherworldly scenes depicted stretch from history to folklore, while sometimes blending the two – carefully crafted in a Baroque style magnified by precise strokes of colour. In the time it takes to absorb the entirety of these stunning artworks, you may find returning to reality a bit difficult.

I grew up in nearly complete isolation from culture and much of anything in the art world. It was, however, a great place to feed my imagination and combat boredom and loneliness.

We also dive into the sensual storytelling of Issue 47 cover artist Soey Milk. At first blush, Soey’s distinctive aesthetic evokes fantasised notions of sensual decadence, luxurious intimacy and an erotic aristocracy. The female figures, exquisitely rendered with near photo-realism, seemingly set amongst sumptuous silks and extravagant, upper-class textiles from unspecified eras and continents, invite those impressions.

A sense of ‘fullness’ arises from everything coming together. You have your inspiration. You have the ability. You are well rested and excited to create. And then you exist with this empty-readiness, trying not to completely control this image but to guide it with knowledge and intuition. If I embrace all the probabilities, the paint brings me gifts I can utilise. It’s like magic.

Next we welcome you to the world of American painter Andrea Kowch, the Musonium Grand Prize Award Winner of the 2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize. Andrea’s life, and works, are based around the wide open spaces of the American Midwest or the storm-swept shores of the Great Lakes. Andrea’s paintings are full of surrealistic allegory to allow the modern viewer to relate.

I hope my work will help the audience challenge their perception of normality and transport them into a world that is remote enough that one can be freed from toxic triggers and reimagine themselves.

Time to get inspired as we learn what Emily Patricia Eccles, owner of Nanny Goat Gallery, would like to add to her personal collection this Issue’s Curator’s Wishlist.

We also take a look into the work Ted Pim, whose paintings are perfect examples of pastiche. A pastiche is a work of visual art, literature, theatre, or music that celebrates and honours the style or character of another work, artist, or period. It is here – a place of love, respect, and admiration – where Ted finds a solid base from where he departs on his personal artistic journey.

I did not realise so many people would also connect with my work, so it can be a bit scary to share these types of drawings with such a large audience. That being said, it has been a great reminder that most of us are not alone in our experiences and feelings.

Felicia Chiao

Illustrator Felicia Chiao’s “fleshy stick figure”, as she has called it on her socials, could be everyone and no one all at once. “Over time, my motivation for drawing developed from teenage angst into sincere experimentation and curiosity,” the artist tells Beautiful Bizarre.

“Often our dreams are not entirely real; often in a dream is transformed… our thoughts flow into each other,” muses painter Ulyana Turchenko on the ways her subjects meld into each other and the worlds they inhabit. The realms she paints would not look out of place lining the halls in the palace of Morpheus, the Greek God of dreams. Their otherworldly beauty is at once haunting and hopeful.

Cast your gaze towards the imagination of Tania Marmolejo as she nurtures the expressions of the feminine soul in her work. She paints large-scale figurative contemporary portraits of women with bold eyes and lips, where dynamic facial expressions oscillate between wonder, amusement, power, and serenity.

Tania’s art is a vibrant celebration of the intricate layers of the feminine experience, infused with the spirit of her unique cultural roots. With a mix of Scandinavian coolness and Caribbean warmth, she channels her heritage and worldly adventures into each piece.

Excerpt by Andrea Kovacic

Era Leisner’s beautifully layered artwork is every human’s innate relationship to nature. Straddling the line between figurative painting, symbolism and surrealism, fact and fable, her paintings are a meditation on the world around us, a universe interconnected and living in fragile harmony.

When I was younger, I considered becoming a philosopher or a cartoonist but, since I was penniless at that time, I told myself it would be better to do something that provided a decent income and lifestyle. It seemed better to have a regular income than to be someone who only has a fascinating personality. I do not regret it; you can let others paint instead of painting yourself. In my next life I will become a painter.

In the Quick Q & A editorial, we ask Georgios Georgolios, Rima Day, E. E. Kono, Ornélie, and Vasilisa Romanenko to answer the same questions:

  • What is the high point of your career so far?
  • If you could ask any artist, living or dead, a single question, who and what would you ask?
  • If you didn’t have to worry about social media, what would you do differently in your art practice?
  • How can artists and galleries work together to educate the public on the importance of hand-made art over A.I. art?

In this Issues’ Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory editorial we highlight the work of many exceptional artists and photographers including: Andrea du Plessis, Amy Salomone, theartistrobert, Daniel McMahon, Courtney Alnutt, Rachel Romano, Ramona Russu, Mrs SteamCloudy, Kate Van Doren, Storöy, Janaina Medeiros, Randy Gaul, Valerie Savarie, Jacqueline Butter-worth, Jesse Dickson, Bob Doucette, Theo Polymorphos, Lorena Kloosterboer, Masa Zodros, Iva Troj, Pritha Bhadra, and Robyn Lees-West.

Additionally, in Issue 47, we highlight more of the artisan fashion designers that have caught the eye of our Deputy Editor and Editor-in-Chief, in this Issue’s Some of our Favourite Things editorial.
