Suffering from Imposter Syndrome? Quarantine Events new eBook may be the answer you need

“We’re going to question some beliefs”, states Carles Gomila in the introductory chapter of Quarantine Events’ new eBook, Overcoming Imposter Syndrome. “We’ll do it in-depth, and sometimes it’ll hurt. [But] I’ll only give you what we’ve proven works.”

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome is the latest support material released by Quarantine Events. The Menorca-based organization has forged a name for themselves as a no-BS artist quarantine and support network, helping artists from around the world to shake free the shackles of what holds them back and grow with less fear and trepidation.

At 123 pages, Quarantine Events’ free eBook is a diamond of knowledge. It is eight full years of experiments, experiences and conversations with hundreds of artists, condensed and revitalized into this new and shiny form. Designed to “cut to the chase and not waste your time”, the eBook shares wisdom from the experiences of many, including a selection of deeply personal revelations by well-respected artists including Henrik Uldalen, Vincent Desiderio, and Phil Hale.

Sparkling in the darkness against your inner self-doubt, Overcoming Imposter Syndrome is an eloquently written text with its fair share of humour (and pop culture references), with wit as sharp as any diamond to match.

This eBook won’t be for everyone.

Quarantine Events has built a community based on a balance of hard truths and uplifting support. Their ethos encourages artists to look inward without judgement, but without self-deception either. Fostering a mindset of learning to work with your demons rather than trying to vanquish them, Overcoming Imposter Syndrome builds on Quarantine’s core principles previously explored and taught to hundreds of artists within their bi-annual artist quarantines.

Don’t expect any hand holding here; this is far from the realms of those self-help books guiding you to “be your best self”. Instead, expect something a little more raw but inherently more valuable: “It’s home grown”, states Carles. “We don’t deal in hearsay.”

Just like their artist quarantines, not every artist will be ready to take on what Quarantine has to offer in this free eBook. But importantly: you won’t know if you’re ready, unless you give it a try.

So why should I read it?

Firstly, imposter syndrome isn’t just for artists. It can be experienced in multiple layers of our lives, each as debilitating as the next. The beauty of this eBook is that its insights into imposter syndrome can be transferred to numerous circumstances… how much better off could we all be by overcoming that little voice of doom?

But don’t worry; there is plenty in this eBook focussed on art and the artist! (After all, that’s what Quarantine Events is about.)

Ultimately, Overcoming Imposter Syndrome traverses you through numerous short chapters, slowly tapping away at any self-perceptions –and self-deceptions- that may have grown around you. It can make you look at the very essence of imposter syndrome in a new light. The journey may not always feel nice, and you may not always agree, but Carles provides enough examples through which his points (and why they are important) can be understood. In a short, clear style of communication, Carles Gomila takes you on a journey through which to take a fresh look on things including, but not limited to:

The definition of imposter syndrome (and its many faces)

Fear, and why you may feel it

Pain avoidance (and a better way to deal with it)

Mapping confidence (understanding the different types of confidence – with accessible references from modern pop culture to help!)

The blame game (and how to move onto The Path to Competence with Confidence)

Believing in yourself (and how to do it)

Learning vs experiencing

Breaking the cycle

Falling in love with the process

Taking a new direction

Undoubtedly, the eBook upholds Quarantine Events’ direct approach to giving support, and the tone could take some getting used to. I highly suggest, however, that readers stick with it until the end. Amid the unswerving and highly observational narrative there is a good dollop of humour, and some memorable memes and quotes in there too.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome delves into so many angles from which to analyse insecurity and confidence, it’s near impossible to finish without some food for thought. The eBook breaks down situations and behaviours before breaking down your walls, yet this is delicately balanced with a hefty list of positive examples through which to build better practices. Constructively, at no point are you left to flounder in your newfound state of self-realisation. Suggested patterns in behaviours are there for the taking, new thought processes laid on a plate, if you wish to try them.

Providing enough as a standalone tool, it’s surprising to learn that Overcoming Imposter Syndrome is but the introductory chapter to a much more ambitious path in the making…
