About the Gallery //
Haven Gallery is run by Erica Berkowitz and Joseph Weinreb. The gallery first opened in 2015 in the Carriage House of historic Northport, NY. Within two years, the gallery doubled in size and expanded into the entire Carriage House building. Through their successful in-house exhibitions and presentations at art fairs both domestic and international, Haven opened a secondary location at 90 Main St., in 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic. It was at that point, that Erica and Joseph knew it was time to find a permanent location for their artists. In January of 2022, they bought the building at 50 Main st., and opened its doors as Haven Gallery’s perennial home.
Haven Gallery’s focus is on exhibiting emotionally, intellectually and imaginatively driven, representational artwork that connects the audience and artist with universal axioms and passions. We work with both emerging and established artists who transcend their medium and subjects by exploring the world around them as well as the one within themselves.
Jason Mowry, Naturpoesie
Press // Haven Gallery is pleased to present “Naturpoesie”, a collection of new paintings by Ohio based Jason Mowry. “Naturpoesie” is Mowry’s fourth solo show at the gallery and features ten new paintings focusing on narrative portraiture as it pertains to folklore and poetry. Specifically, one finds inspiration from the German Romantics and their idea of “Naturpoesie”, which translates to “natural poetry” as well as the Grimm brothers tales (who were known to embrace this poetic and nostalgic style of story telling). Additional influences from mythology and the multifaceted nature of the human condition bond with Naturpoesie, resulting in an emotionally fervent body of work.
About Jason Mowry // Jason grew up between the art museums and comic book shops, combining the rhythms of each to walk the line between formal art and the fantastic. Jason calls Ohio home where he keeps a studio as well as teaches at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Inspired by the stories he reads, and the people and times that surround him, Jason’s work blends myth, personal narrative, and symbolic imagery to speak to the larger collective narrative.
Amahi Mori, In The Water of Souls
Press// Haven Gallery is pleased to present Japan based Amahi Mori for her second solo show “In The Water of Souls”. “In The Water of Souls” features six works on paper exploring the theme of life and circulation, illustrated by the integral form of sustenance: water. Fluidity of being is exemplified in the artists choice of curving bodies, strings of pearls and the detailed patterning of the flora and animal kingdom. The necessity of the water in life trickles through Mori’s compositions, mimicking the swirling flow of the element, celebrating the vital liquid and honoring its role in the gift of life.
Artist Statement // “I depict the female body as the main motif, with the cycle, flow, and transformation of life as a central theme. Parts of the head or body of the female figures are fused with or replaced by plants and animals. In most of my works, I tend to obscure the faces of the figures to strengthen their anonymity. Similarly, I refrain from clothing them for the same reason—I want to present the figures as neutral life forms within the painting. The humanoid forms, painted with elements that leave nationality, time periods, or personality ambiguous, exist there as mere “vessels of life,” equal to the plants and insects.
For this solo exhibition, I chose the theme of “In the water of souls” Water, the source of life, is a sacred blessing but can also be a threat at times, encompassing both life and death. Water is the very essence of circulation. I sought purification from water’s elemental nature, hoping it would wash away the stagnation of the mind and body.
The “flowing water pattern” (one of Japan’s traditional designs) that I incorporated into this work symbolizes the continuous, unceasing flow of water. As flowing water neither rots nor clouds, it is considered a fortunate pattern that carries away hardships and misfortune. Additionally, I’ve assigned the motif of pearls, which come from the motherly sea, to symbolize individual souls. Sometimes connected and sometimes scattered, they represent the idea of “bonds.” – Amahi Mori

Gina Matarazzo, Mouses and Other Feets
Press // Haven Gallery is pleased to present “Mouses and Other Feets”, a solo show of new work from New Jersey based artist Gina Matarazzo. “Mouses and Other Feeds” is Matarazzo’s third solo show at the gallery and features ten new oil paintings of small mammals exuding personality as they conduct in the business of indulging in snacks, playing music and going on adventures. Continuing her exploration of miniature art, Matarazzo paints detailed narratives of lilliputian critters as they are out and about in their tiny worlds, bringing humor and joy to those around them.
Artist Statement // What is it about a sweet little mouse that is delightful to see on one level, but frightening on another, should you find one sitting on your nose unexpectedly in the morning while waking up in bed?
Small mammals have captured our imaginations for decades. Why have mice been made into heroes in books and popular culture?
I think it’s partly because most of us like an underdog. We like for the small fellow to win, to show cleverness and moxie. It’s common for humans to sometimes feel insignificant and like we can’t change things. So, rooting for the little mouse to snatch his food from a maze, or outrun a cat or dog, just makes us feel like we will be OK if such a little being can prevail.
In my show, “Mouses, and Other Feets”, I play with our co-existence with small mammals, weaving the human and natural world together, with a little whimsy, a dash or twenty of poetic license, and a LOT of color.
I hope my little cast of characters brings you good cheer!
Leslie Levings, Reading Reversals
Press // Haven Gallery is pleased to present California based sculptor Leslie Levings for her first solo show “Reading Reversals” at the gallery. “ Reading Reversals” features eighteen ceramic works depicting animals in varying postures as they interpret reversals of the Tarot Card deck. “Reading Reversals” uses the iconic imagery of this esoteric card set, with an emphasis on the upturned, forcing the viewer to expand their perspective of the other side. Visual ambiguities of existence are explored through posture, texture, color, finish and expression, avoiding direct answers and explanations.
About the Artist // Leslie Levings explores natural history, myth-making, and the human emotional experience through her creature sculpture. Leslie is also the creator of The Beastlies™️: an ongoing line of small but expressive monsters collected by fans around the world and currently in development with Bad Robot and Mattel.
When not sculpting, Leslie is a writer and producer in animation. She also founded and helps runs the Wayward Retreat, an annual retreat for creatives pursuing their artistic calling.
Over the past few years, Leslie Levings has discovered that tarot cards can be a wonderful tool for artists. A visual language made up of pieces that are familiar in ways both universal and personal, when shuffled and dealt, present infinite combinations suggesting as many variations on the human narrative.
Artist Statement // The myths and stories we tell through these symbols are deepened and complicated when we choose to read the reversals as well — cards that are dealt upside down. Far from meaning the simple opposite of a right side up card, these pulls invite us to consider the shadow side of our story, or a flipped point of view. We’re invited to remember that our greatest strength is the same as our weakest point and that destruction can contain the seed of rebirth, like a pine cone opened by forest fire.
With this collection, the artist is hoping to investigate reversals, unexpected perspectives, and the point where fortune and misfortune change places. Through creatures and symbols, snapshots of fables emerge, unknown but familiar in the way an illustration in a book of myths might be. Or a tarot card from a strange deck.
Nom Kinnear King, Barley Be Gone
Press // Haven Gallery is honored to present “Barley Be Gone”, a solo show of new work from England based artist Nom Kinnear King. “Barley Be Gone” is Kinnear King’s third solo show at the gallery and features her classical narratives led by women who exist in a familiar world of nostalgia, laced with magic and kinship with the natural world. A focus on handiwork and celebration around the homestead, specifically centered around the harvest, fills Kinnear King’s new collection with the nostalgia and enchantments of companionship and reaping.
About the Artist // Nom, Originally from the Norfolk countryside, studied Fine Art at Norwich School of Art and Design, going on to be based in Melbourne, Brighton, London and Varese Italy. Nom now paints from her Studio back in the flatlands of Norfolk in the fine City of Norwich. Gathering inspiration from found objects and her surroundings; working in oils and pastels to create imaginary female portraits.
The subjects are girls who roam from town to town in a patchwork old fashioned never world, where rusty melodies trail their steps, their curious behavior shadowed by sweet melancholy. Influenced from a young age by her father’s love of the impressionists, magical realism in literature, film and folklore from around the world. Nom has been filling her notebooks throughout the years with her solitary wanderers.
