Mishelle Sherri is a member of the Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory
Mishelle Sherri is a multimedia artist and illustrator who tells dark and bizarre stories using the delicate craft of paper sculpture. Their style can be compared to a colourful tapestry woven with threads of influence from M.C. Escher, Akiya Kageichi, Ernst Fuchs, and other artists they admire. A couple of scalpels and a stack of construction paper – that is practically all Mishelle needs to create a sculpture.
Every part of the sculpture is meticulously cut by hand. To make cutouts more rigid and prevent potential damage, Mishelle soaks them in PVA glue until they have stiffened and then bends them at different angles to create an illusion of volume. They often draw and paint over the cutouts using watercolour, micron pens, and coloured pencils. Apart from construction paper, Mishelle occasionally uses cellulose film, as it creates a mesmerising play of colours when light passes through it.
In essence, Mishelle’s works are visual riddles that require patience and an eye for detail; every stroke, shape, and colour conceals layers of meaning, inviting viewers to engage in a playful dance of interpretation. As an artist, Mishelle speaks in a language of allusions, cultural references, and symbols, often derived from their dream sequences and archetypal imagery. Their art is an intricate game where your interpretation is as valid as the initial idea, as they consider every viewer to be their co-author.
Literature lies at the heart of Mishelle’s creative universe. Most of their drawings and sculptures are based on books that shaped them into the person they are today, such as The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse and Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar.
Yet Mishelle’s work is more than merely creating a visual accompaniment to literary compositions; their aim is to reimagine these narratives, offering fresh perspectives and breathing new life into timeless tales.
Mishelle Sherri views their art not only as a way to explore the human condition and express their civic position in a creative manner but also as a cathartic outlet, a tool to externalize their Weltschmerz. They often use their works as a window into their restless mind.
