Christian Boehmer: Figurative Painter: Interview

Christian-Boehmer-versus

Christian Boehmer, Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into his autodidact practice and experience as a figurative painter, as he responds to the questions below:

  • What type of art do you create and what motivates you to make it?
  • What is your biggest pain point as an artist?
  • Tell us about an important life moment that influenced the direction of your work, and how.
  • How has social media changed your practice?

What type of art do you create and what motivates you to make it?

I work on abstracted / masked realistic human portraiture. As my work always wants to focus on human behaviour and mainly criticises characteristics, like egocentric world views or narcissism there’s currently a growing need to focus on and think about these topics, which is of course a motivation to keep going.

What is your biggest pain point as an artist?

Don’t believe the hype.

Tell us about an important life moment that influenced the direction of your work, and how.

When I was a young street art/ graffiti artist, I experimented a lot, always coming up with new ideas and therefore often changed my artistic directions. Then I was invited to join a group exhibition at one of the most popular/ influential street art galleries in Cologne (Germany). But the gallery owner was struggling with what exactly a “Christian Boehmer artwork” was about, and that there was no individual red line to follow. So, I began to work and focus on what’s really ‘me’ as an individual artist.

How has social media changed your practice?

I try not to be influenced by that, but it’s really hard to ignore. Instead, if being time pressured and follower growth driven, I try to use it as a tool to get inspiration and send updates on my projects when I think it makes sense.
