About the Gallery //

Thinkspace Projects was founded in 2005; now in LA’s burgeoning West Adams District, the gallery has garnered an international reputation as one of the most active and productive exponents of the New Contemporary Art Movement. Maintaining its founding commitment to the promotion and support of its artists, Thinkspace Projects has steadily expanded its roster and diversified its projects, creating collaborative and institutional opportunities all over the world. Founded in the spirit of forging recognition for young, emerging, and lesser-known talents, the gallery is now home to artists from all over the world, ranging from the emerging, mid-career, and established.

The New Contemporary Art Movement, not unlike its earlier 20th Century counterparts like Surrealism, Dada, or Fauvism, ultimately materialized in search of new forms, content, and expressions that cited rather than disavowed the individual and the social. The earliest incarnations of the Movement, refusing the paradigmatic disinterest of “Art” as an inaccessible garrison of ‘high culture’, championed figuration, surrealism, representation, pop culture, and the subcultural.

By incorporating the ‘lowbrow,’ accessible, and even profane, an exciting and irreverent art movement grew in defiance of the mandated renunciations of “high” art. Emerging on the West Coast in the 90’s partly as a response to the rabid ‘conceptual-turn’ then championed on the East Coasts, the Movement steadily created its own platforms, publications, and spaces for the dissemination of its imagery and ideas.

NUNO VIEGAS, ‘Storybook’

In STORYBOOK, Nuno Viegas reflects on the intersection of past and future, rebellion and responsibility, anonymity and legacy. Nuno explores his journey from a teenage graffiti writer to becoming a father, contemplating the values, experiences, and lessons passed from one generation to the next.

Graffiti has been a defining force in Viegas’s life, shaping his character through both beautiful and challenging moments. He sees graffiti as an expression of brotherhood, unity, and shared experience – a culture where moments are lived for the sake of the moment itself, free from material gain. In a world driven by money and power, graffiti serves as a reminder that true fulfillment comes from collective memories, shared with those who stand beside us.

Although this body of work revolves around graffiti – this is not graffiti. Much like René Magritte’s C̈eci n’est pas une pipe ̈, these paintings do not claim to be what they represent. Instead, they are a reflection – a translation of graffiti’s elements, aesthetics, and values into a new visual language. Viegas takes inspiration from the scene but presents it through a different lens, stripping it of its urban environment and reinterpreting it with a minimalistic and realistic approach.

Graffiti transcends social barriers, welcoming people from all backgrounds, cultures, and identities. This belief is at the core of Viegas’s signature hooded figures – Anonymous, they represent a community where one’s roots or status do not define them. Their identities remain hidden because in graffiti, as in life, what truly matters is not where you come from, but the stories you create.

Through his signature clean aesthetic and meticulous technique, Viegas elevates elements of graffiti beyond the streets, inviting us to see them not just as remnants of rebellion, but as symbols of connection, freedom, and legacy. STORYBOOK is more than an exhibition – it is an open letter to the next generation, a reflection on what we choose to pass on, and an invitation to rethink the values that shape us.

KEVIN PETERSON ‘Mist’

Thinkspace is excited to present our seveth solo exhibition together with Kevin Peterson (b. 1979 USA). ‘Mist’ showcases 15 new works, including the debut of two new pieces that explore a more three dimensional approach incorporating elements of sculpture.

“My work is about the varied journeys we take through life. It’s about growing up and living in a world that is broken. These paintings are about trauma, fear and loneliness and the strength that it takes to survive and thrive. They each contain the contrast of the untainted, young and innocent against a backdrop of a worn, ragged, and defiled world. Support versus restraint, bondage versus freedom, and tension versus slack are all themes that I often visit.

My work deals with isolation, loneliness and longing teamed with a level of optimistic hope. Issues of race and the division of wealth have arisen in my recent work. This work deals with the idea of rigid boundaries, the hopeful breakdown of such restrictions, as well as questions about the forces that orchestrate our behavior.” – Kevin Peterson

WANG YALONG ‘Beyond the Stars’

Thinkspace is honored to host Wang Yalong (b. 1989 Beijing, China) for his debut U.S. solo exhibition ‘Beyond the Stars’ this April at Thinkspace Projects.

“Seven or eight stars beyond the sky, and two or three raindrops in front of the mountain.”

“Every time I read this line from Xin Qiji, I can’t help but think about that deep, vast starry sky, as if it could hold all of our emotions within it. In my exhibition “Beyond the Stars”, I want to take you all on a journey to experience that sense of romance and endless imagination that only the stars can evoke. Every star seems like our past dreams and memories, shining brightly in the distance, pulling at our hearts and guiding us toward the future.

For me, these pieces are not just paintings; they’re more like shooting stars. Their existence may be fleeting, but they shine with an eternal light. Each work tells a story from the past—youth, dreams, and those warm memories. But they also speak of my hopes and dreams for the future. I always feel that even though a shooting star fades, its light still lives on in our hearts, transforming into stardust that guides us on a new journey.

The title “Beyond the Stars” was inspired by that beautiful line of poetry. It sparked so much in me, wanting to capture that distant and profound emotion, like the starry sky itself. Here, the past and the future come together, and memory and hope collide. Every star represents a dream, descending from beyond the sky to light the path toward the beautiful future we long for.” – Wang Yalong
