Carmen Rosa is a self-taught Puerto Rican artist born in 1977. Raised with a father in the military she spent much of her young life moving throughout the different bases in the US and Germany. Her work consists of a collection of dark, illustrative paintings and sketches. As a night shift Respiratory Therapist, she has worked around the dead and dying for many years. She has treated patients in all levels of hospital care from neonatal intensive care to emergency rooms, trauma rooms, intensive care units and most recently as a frontline healthcare worker during the Covid pandemic.
You can usually find her during downtime with her headphones on and sketchpad in hand. Listening to music and drawing for her is a way of de-stressing between the episodes of chaos she sometimes faces in her line of work. These collections of sketches were what started her on her path as an artist. She feels that her love for fantasy, science fiction and anime films along with working in healthcare have had an influence in her art.
Carmen Rosa is an artist by day and Respiratory Therapist at night. She’s a mother of three teenagers and live with an autoimmune condition called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE. It can be very challenging to find the time to create. Carmen uses her art as an outlet for all the stressful, traumatic and depressive experiences she’s been through in her life. Mix that in with a love for sci-fi and fantasy and here she is. She uses oil paints and crystals on canvas to express the floodgate of ideas, emotions, colors mixed with fantasies and daydreams that become her work.
Carmen Rosa’s work portrayed are surrealistic views of Death and the Macabre, Despair, hopelessness, mysticism, Hope and Rebirth and divine feminine.
