Gallery House (Toronto, Canada) unveiled a number of Ray Caesar‘s brand new works that he completed at the beginning of this year. This is a wonderful chance to view his large scale one-of-a-kind works. Unlike his limited edition prints (on archival paper), these pieces are mounted on canvases and wood panels which adds an additional dimension to his works. Alongside them are several one-of-a-kind 6″ x 6″ studies he created when he was composing those new digital artworks, as well as his limited edition prints.

“The unconscious is more truthful and honest and tainted then we think …” In this show Caesar’s work uncovers the deep desires and secrets we hide even from ourselves as he explores the inescapable weight of memory and how it can taint our perception of the physical world. Ray Caesar’s digital paintings exist in a world unto themselves, a place that is not on any map or mentioned in any guidebook. Ornate, architectural and sinister, they echo the grandeur of Reynolds and Gainsborough and the grace of Rococo artists Watteau and Boucher, but have a dreamy, dark, otherworldly quality that feel both sensual and sinister.
