“I believe it is still necessary for women to provide a contemporary view to this representation of the feminine through the medium of art.”
@angelesagrela’s paintings center the relevance of hair to our identity and within the social perception of a person. The artist explains in her statement: “In these drawings, attention is diverted from specific facial features to encourage extra attention towards other aspects of the drawing which define the figure as a person. It is like concealing a part of what characterizes us, in order to attract our attention towards the rest of what we have chosen to represent our image. In this way, the mass of hair which covers the face and the clothing comes into play. For Ángeles Agrela, the symbolism behind the mask is important, as is what the hair has and still symbolizes in many cultures, and what the chameleonic character that fashion and attire add to the image of a person, even when the face is hidden.”

“I want to understand as much as I can about what it means to be human,” @emma_hopkins_artist says. “We are not just the clothed person we present to the world. We are the mind and body that we inhabit. There are aspects that connect us all and we are also unique individuals. I moved into painting portraits because it is a celebration of this.”
Emma’s paintings are extremely honest. There is no filter between us and the subject, no artist who censored and/or beautified: These nude bodies are what they are - on the canvas and in reality. This appearance is what communicates both vulnerability and strength, because as humans we continuously maneuver between those two.
