Interview with Renée Tay, vintage toy assemblage sculptor

Renée Tay Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into her practice and experience in vintage toy assemblage, as she responds to the questions below:

  • What is the high point of your career so far?
  • If you could ask any artist, living or dead, a single question who and what would you ask?
  • If you didn’t have to worry about social media what would you do differently in your art practice?
  • How can artists and galleries work together to educate the public on the importance of hand made art over AI?

What is the high point of your career so far?

Besides being thrilled to be featured in Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s upcoming Issue 51, I have to share that last year I experienced a remarkable month in art sales directly from my studio—more than I usually sell in two full years. It was just four clients, but it completely blew my mind… seriously! I only wish every month could be like that, though I know it was an exceptionally fortunate moment.

If you could ask any artist, living or dead, a single question who and what would you ask?

I would love to meet Banksy and help keep the mystery of his identity alive. I’d ask him whether he ever plans to reveal who he really is, maybe toward the later part of his life?

If you didn’t have to worry about social media what would you do differently in your art practice?

Oh my, should I be worrying? I’m not usually a worrier. I go through phases where I post a lot on Instagram and Facebook, and then times when I hardly post at all. It really depends on whether I’m preparing for an upcoming show or a large project, since I enjoy sharing my works in progress. I’m impressed by artists who keep up with posting regularly on social media, but I just don’t tie myself to it. I suppose if I did, I might gain more followers, but it takes so much work. So, I can’t really say that social media changes anything in my art practice.

How can artists and galleries work together to educate the public on the importance of hand made art over AI?

For artists and galleries to live by example by creating and showing only art that is hand created.
