New Works by Ed Binkley @ Copro Gallery: ‘Holymen & Monsters’

We celebrate the return of award-winning fantasy artist Ed Binkley to Copro Gallery. His latest show plays deeper with the blurred lines between monster and man, shaking our perceptions between repulse and connection, and the physical element that clothing can play within this. A professional artist for over three decades, Ed Binkley has been published in multiple art publications and has an impressive client list including: Lucasfilm, Tool, Suntup Editions, Wizards of the Coast, and ImagineFX, among others.

[This show] developed from my lifelong fascination with vestments and official costumes, and how they affect our perception of the characters and creatures wearing them. I’ve combined that with my interest in beings designated or recognized by a given society as having inscrutable connections to other worlds – spiritual, cosmic, past, whatever the specific need and priority of that society is at the moment.

Additionally, Jose Luis Galvan will unveil an exhibit of work associated with ‘Animal Things’. Each oil painting tells a story about a bunny, a rabbit, and a fox, all with human characteristics.

If that wasn’t enough, Copro Gallery are also hosting a ‘Continuation’ of their recent booth at the LA Artshow 2024, with many of the artists represented now sharing their works within the gallery space. On top of all of that, the Bergamot Station Arts Complex – which holds Copro Gallery – is also having an all-day frieze event! All galleries within the complex will be having events, along with food and music.

What better place to spend your Saturday?

Ed Binkley: ‘Holymen & Monsters’

This incredible solo exhibition is Ed Binkley’s second solo show with Copro Gallery. The exhibition includes 18 original drawings and the two recent Tool posters created by Ed Binkley, embellished and signed by the artist!

Shamans, priests and priestesses, wizards, witches, and seers have always been foremost in my imagination and my creative pursuits.” Says Ed Binkley. “Lately I’ve started playing with the question of where exactly a vestment might end and the creature’s body begins – is the costume a living part of the being, or is it taken on-and-off as we normally think of clothing?

“It is possible to blur the distinction, both figuratively and literally? At what point does that combination/confusion render something unified and inseparable, without distinction between living flesh and assumed clothing? And what therefore does that blending do to our perception of its nature? When does the holyman, faery, or imp become a monster?

“Along those thoughts, I also wish to create monsters who retain some vestiges of human-ness. I believe that the monsters that are most disturbing, frightening, or imbedded in our thoughts (their raison d’étre) are those that persistently remind us of ourselves. When we can identify with some aspect of a monstrosity, a connection is established and we instinctively become more interested in that creature’s story – its own longings, fears, needs, and purposes – in spite of any initial repulsion we might feel.

“Those monsters linger in our thoughts and dreams longer and with more effect, and we are more likely to explore what their deformities might represent in our own psyches and lives. We long for the experience of seeing our deeper anxieties, flaws, and wishes made real, verified and deemed to exist.”
