“My teachers in the visual arts were the photographers and lighting technicians of the old Hollywood studio system. I learned how to draw and paint from vintage movie stills. I learned how to make an image tell stories from watching those old movie stills come to life on late-night TV in the days before infomercials and reality shows.”
@officialtroybrooks with ‘Adonata’, a glamorous and seductive beauty in coloured pencil on paper. Look closely into these stunning eyes and dive into this depth; we guarantee you a moment away from reality!
Time to escape the rabbit hole: @marc_burckhardt with the right wishes and energy for 2022! This painting really resonates with the current situation: Observing the situation carefully, evaluating the situation and being ready (or, let’s say, prepared) to move back inside. Do you feel me? 😞
The character design of @tahraart is from another world: Cyberpunk creatures, fantasy warriors, or just a casual (yet special) human being - Kyounghwan Kim offers a wide range of diverse personalities and their stories.
Strangely cute and intriguingly complex: @kanemaki_yoshitoshi’s wood sculptures tell stories of confusion, inconsistency and multiplicity. Yoshitoshi employs the traditional Japanese technique of ‘Ichiboku-Zukuri’ forming one log into a one-piece sculpture.
This peaceful and calm energy is contagious. @aqualisa creates stunning paintings, juxtapositions of still lives and animal portraits that flow in and out of each other and grow together. Lisa Ericson shares about this piece: “I started this piece in October 2020. Was I using art as a bit of therapy? Maybe just a little. And it’s still resonating with me today as I wonder when we’ll all get to come out of our foxholes and be together again.”
Okay, we're a little cuckoo for art, which is probably apparent since we publish a magazine packed to the gills with the most edgy, exciting contemporary creatives ;)
Want to know why we regularly tip off our community when we learn about upcoming art exhibitions?
Because artists are OUR PEOPLE, and their successes make us genuinely HAPPYYyyyyy!
That's why we're sending out big time yayys and 'way to go'(s) to @kristeneganart, whose solo show "ALL THINGS IT DEVOURS", is opening at @archenemyarts this Friday, January 21st.
Her gourd-based masks - augmented with artfully sculpted/carved paper clay, acrylics and metal leaf - are really quite imaginative...here are a few shots of the shiny new creations that will be featured on Friday :)
