“My current series is an exploration of the challenges people can experience with mental health and how the world continues to operate around individuals despite their struggle. Like many, I have experienced my own relationship with depression and anxiety throughout my lifetime. Yet, we often fail to recognize it culturally. The figures I paint have their heads wreathed in fire and are placed in scenes where their obvious condition goes unnoticed. I began this series depicting my own personal battles with severe depression, though it resonates with others’ experiences as well.”
@rodneythompsonart with a statement about his new series that captures the context of mental health with striking symbolism.
"The Queen's Indisputable Law"
[Your Freedom ends
Where my Word begins] (mixed media, 30x40cm)
Interestingly, this piece by @illusorya was inspired by Alice in Wonderland!
"The Queen of Hearts is always my favourite fairytale villain. She's literally nonsense and a psychopath, she personifies pure human wickedness without limits of thought and morality. It's hard not to get somehow drawn to that attitude of hers because she represents, in the most elegant and regal form, the taboo side of humanity.
Anyone would be afraid of a beast. But the Queen of Hearts draws attention to her illusory aesthetic... Obviously, I couldn't help but be attracted to her, even in artistic form."
INSIDE ISSUE 34 // “Making art has felt so insignificant in the face of everything we’ve witnessed and embodied this past year, but hanging onto the moments when someone connects to something I’ve created makes it feel like I’m doing something meaningful.”

Japanese artist @krnpx_kurono's piece “Space Age Mystic Order" came 14th place in High Art 2021 by @natural_cannabis_company - better known as artist “Kurono”, he has done various designs for tees, CDs, posters and more.
His creation style is “cute and creepy”, blending cute elements with weird, poisonous twists that can produce fascinating artworks.
“This piece is a representation of a sensation I feel when I’m experiencing an aura followed by a seizure, where my mind and my vision become impaired.
I tried to hide being an epileptic for a long time, making it difficult for myself and for anyone else to fully understand my actions. Keeping it in the dark, enabled my habit of self loathing. Creating these pieces have been an incredibly cathartic experience as I’m beginning to unravel the layers of secrecy and pain that enveloped me.”
‘Aura’ by @jeska_valk is an indeed beautiful response and visual reflection of the artist’s personal experience with epilepsy. The eyes of the subject are hidden behind a veil of lace, which Jeska chose to implement because of its “fragility and strength”. This ambivalence, which we encounter as well in relation to eyes and mouth, and all these fine and detailed patterns are just capturing.
