Interview with realist painter Rachel Ivanyi

Rachel Ivanyi, Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into her practice and experience as a realist painter, as she responds to the questions below:

  • If you had to choose only three words that you feel describe your work, what would they be? And why?
  • Many things inundate our daily lives. What role do you feel art and the artist still have in today’s society?
  • If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be with and why?
  • What do you think is the single most important piece of advice you have been given as an artist?

If you had to choose only three words that you feel describe your work, what would they be? And why?

Intricate, Layered, and Magical

Intricate in my love of the little details- the shape of snake scales, the combination of textures, the details inherent to each unique being.

Layered in the use of media, pushing the limits of watercolor and mixing medias to tell a specific story. Layered in the art’s message and meaning, combining scientific inquiry with imaginative storytelling.

Magical for showing that nature in its reality is magical, and to also give voice to non-human animals, encouraging viewers to explore our interconnectedness and the innate value of all beings.

Many things inundate our daily lives. What role do you feel art and the artist still have in today’s society?

Art connects, challenges set ways of thinking and makes space for needed joy among a lot of the hardness of life.

If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be with and why?

Beatrix Potter. I discovered her as a young person through her small storybooks, and realized as an adult we were kindred spirits with our love of science, art, and storytelling. We both like to incorporate the truth of nature with the space for the being’s own personalities and worth.

What do you think is the single most important piece of advice you have been given as an artist?

It was my own voice that I finally listened to: Don’t try and change into what others tell me I need to be to gain artistic “success.”  Ignore the “you know what you should do?….” Realize I don’t need to fit into one neat definable box.
