What is your favourite part of the creative process and why?
The part of the painting where it is about 50 to 75% done – This is when my idea and vision start to really take shape.
How does your work reflect you as an individual?
I spend a great deal of time pondering the transient nature of existence, and making meaning out of our time here. My art frequently features skeletons, representing mortality, juxtaposed with images representing change and rebirth, and it also reflects my interest in science and nature.
How do you balance your personal life with your art career while ensuring a healthy work/life balance?
I set aside time to visit my family out of state, as well as to volunteer with my cats visiting elderly residents at assisted living facilities. I also commit to setting aside time for good friends. If I didn’t allocate the time, I would lose touch with friends and family, to my detriment. I tend to enjoy being alone, so I have to make a purposeful effort to reach out.
What advice did you get as a young artist that still influences you today?
Don’t wait to make art – if you wait too long, you’ll lack the energy and enthusiasm to create art. The woman who gave me this advice was a sculptor and she waited until after she retired to make art, and she said it was difficult due to her reduced energy level.
