Interview with surreal digital artist Farzad Golpayegani

Farzad Golpayegani, Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into his practice and experience as a surreal digital artist, as he responds to the questions below:

  • What do you think your art says about you as an individual?
  • What do you do to help move beyond ‘Artist’s Block’?
  • What materials/tools (including brand) can you not live without and why?
  • What inspires your creative practice and why?

What do you think your art says about you as an individual?

I believe it reflects the ongoing tension between aesthetic intent and internal chaos. Often, I try to present subjects that might not be inherently pleasant through a visually beautiful lens. Overall, I think my art expresses a balance of dark and light elements, coexisting in a creative, surreal harmony.

What do you do to help move beyond ‘Artist’s Block’?

I use different approaches depending on the situation. Sometimes, I focus intensely on the subject and sketch it repeatedly in as many variations as possible. Other times, when that doesn’t work, I shift my energy, both mentally and physically, by staying active and giving my mind a break. Doing something completely different helps take the pressure off. After a few hours, or sometimes a day or two away, I usually return with a fresher perspective and new ideas flow more naturally.

What materials/tools (including brand) can you not live without and why?

To be honest, I don’t think there’s a single tool I can’t live without—mainly because I constantly experiment with new techniques and push myself outside of my comfort zone. I believe in making the most of whatever tools are available, rather than relying on the “best” or most expensive options. That said, a few tools have been especially useful in recent years. I often use a reMarkable ink tablet for sketching, note-taking, and concept development. It’s black and white, non-backlit (great for outdoor use), and doesn’t support apps or the internet, which helps me stay focused. I also rely heavily on my XP-Pen 24-inch pen display. it’s highly responsive, with accurate color and brightness, and the pen doesn’t need charging, which is a big plus.

What inspires your creative practice and why?

Almost everything. External factors like politics, social behavior, belief systems, psychology, and nature often influence what I create. But there’s also a strong internal drive, ideas that surface from my unconscious. I don’t always have a rational explanation for these feelings, but I try to express them visually. Those moments of emotional or intuitive expression play a vital role in my work.
