Harman Projects unveils new works by Shepard Fairey: FRACTURED

This Saturday, Harman Projects and Toyroom Gallery present FRACTURED, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist and activist Shepard Fairey. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, world renowned muralist, graphic artist and activist Shepard Fairey currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Known for his distinguished murals and artworks, Shepard has built a strong following of those who appreciate the street-art activism-based messages within his works. His vision and ethos has led him, interestingly, to success in both mainstream and counterculture circles, with his artwork being widely distributed by himself and others to further promote his beliefs spanning political, social, and environmental commentaries. Imbuing various styles, Shepard Fairey encapsulates both the gritty and the beautiful in his art, conveying life and humanity in all of its forms.

Taking place inside San Francisco’s Minnesota Street Project, the special event FRACTURED will share a broad selection of works spanning the legendary artist’s storied career over the past three decades, including an exhibition-exclusive screen print which will be available for in-person purchase at the gallery (online release to follow).

To celebrate, there will also be a special artist talk between notable arts critic and writer Carlo McCormick, who will host an in-person conversation with and Shepard Fairey, in advance of the exhibition opening!

The title of this show, “Fractured,” reflects not only the current state of our culture and socio- political dialogue, but also the theme of duality that I explore in much of my work. This body of work explores the fractured nature of humanity and modern life, and also the beauty found in the fractures such as the rips and tears of layered works on the street.

These imperfections symbolize depth, transformation, and the unexpected beauty of a new creation poetically resulting from a destructive act of transgression. The often-clashing elements in my imagery highlight the yin and yang of exquisite fragility and wholeness—much like our Earth, which is both beautiful and marked by scars and fractures.

The recurrent use of rips as a motif in the work reflect the chaos of the streets where much of my art has lived and died, but also provides a metaphor for the competitive and frenetic nature of a fractured world.
