The Ice Cream Parlor

An ice-cream themed exhibition and experience this special group exhibition is inspired by Cookman Creamery, a bespoke ice cream parlor, located with us on the Arts Block of Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park. Ice cream is sensory, nostalgic, a little indulgent. It’s cold and it melts. It’s tied to memory, to pleasure, to summer, to childhood. It can be humble or over the top. It’s a gift. It’s a mood. It disappears while you’re eating it. It sits on a threshold a foam frozen in suspension, awaiting thaw.
The works in this exhibition are connected by that world: color, texture, emotion, memory, transformation, production and consumption, nostalgia, glacial grief, simple joy, desire, delight- the experience of the ritual of ice-cream. This exhibition was born out of the joy of collaboration, and out of a desire to continue breaking down the perceived barriers of a contemporary gallery space, to make art accessible to everyone who wants to experience it. Renée Tay is represented by Parlor Gallery since 2021. She will have three sculptures in this show besides her other sculptures on display.

Inches Above focuses on life, death and the space in between, think Antoine de Saint-Exupéry dancing with Frida Kahlo in the middle of a tempest during a New Orleans funeral. Or perhaps imagine Johnny Cash singing Hurt inside a circus tent, sitting next to a Memento Mori representing Remedios Varo sleeping next to Ophelia inside a Klimt’s painting.

Hello Dolly!

Making her debut at SideShow Arts, Renée Tay will present at least ten sculptural works in Hello Dolly!, a lively group exhibition featuring 21 artists. The exhibition promises an unexpected celebration of dolls and storytelling, complete with a free doll library, a giant interactive dollhouse, merch, zines, and more.
Stitched Narratives
Renée Tay will also take part in an online exhibition on 1st of December presented by Poetic Tiger Gallery. Bringing together contemporary artists working across embroidery, hand-stitching, appliqué, textile construction, and soft sculpture, the exhibition celebrates the expressive possibilities of fibre-based art. Featuring everything from fabric dolls and textile assemblages to three-dimensional fibre forms, Stitched Narratives highlights the diversity and innovation of artists working with textiles today.
40th Anniversary Show
This fall, Renée Tay returns to La Luz de Jesus Gallery for its highly anticipated 40th Anniversary Exhibition. Having exhibited with the gallery since 2019, Renée is honoured to once again be part of this milestone celebration and will be attending the opening. Founded in 1986 by Billy Shire, La Luz de Jesus Gallery has long been recognized as a pioneering force in the Lowbrow and Pop Surrealism movements. Marking four decades of championing visionary artists, the anniversary exhibition will feature a curated selection of contemporary, underground, and dark surrealist artists from around the world.
Storybook Exhibition
Renée Tay rounds out her exhibition schedule with a return to Inverarity Gallery for the online Storybook Exhibition, opening on 1 December. Marking her second collaboration with the gallery, the exhibition brings together artists inspired by the enduring charm of classic fairy tales. Renée’s contribution sits comfortably within this imaginative collection, where storytelling and craftsmanship come together to reawaken the sense of wonder found in the stories many of us grew up with.
