Last year you sold works from your personal collection. This auction has a different feel in many ways. How does this auction differ from the collection sold last year?

Last year‘s auction was definitely an incredibly difficult one, given how close it was to Shawn’s passing and all still being so fresh. This new auction, sadly, is taking place as we have simply exhausted. The funds raised from the first auction.

We were able to get fully out of debt and get back on track with the Gallery, but sadly things have been very slow this past year in the art world as most people have been hearing about and/or reading about. due to this, we have been hemorrhaging a good bit each month while we fight to stay on course and keep our Gallery family intact.

We’re hoping via this auction that we can get over the hump and things will get back on track going into the new year, but some changes are unfortunately inevitably ahead and with this auction we hope to get some extra fuel in our tank to help us through any rough patches that lay ahead. The goal still being to keep Thinkspace alive and thriving as Shawn’s legacy for as long as we are lucky enough to be able to do so.

Many artists that you’ve showed at your gallery, Thinkspace Projects LA, are represented in this auction. Who are some of the artists being offered that you are most excited about?

Our ethos at the gallery has always been to work with and exhibit the artists that we ourselves collect/would collect (if had indefinite amounts of room to support them all haha). I’ve always felt strongly that if we’re going to represent something as being truly worth your time, money and love to support, that we have to feel the same way about it.

We’ve never drifted down the avenue of selling a particular trendy style or something of that nature, just to pay the rent. We’ve always stuck to our guns, and exhibited work that connects with us and has a good foundation and story to tell.

The works that are included this time around, were some of the pieces that myself, and Sean held most dear. Works that I never really felt we would have to part with, but sadly here we are included our some marquee works for some of the biggest artist we have worked with over the years, some of whom seldom work at a smaller scale these days, making these works all the more desirable.

Works from the likes of Esao Andrews, Audrey Kawasaki, Brian M. Viveros, Fuco Ueda, Cinta Vidal, Alex Face and so many more, are included, that I never thought I would have to say goodbye to. With that said, the gallery as Shawn’s legacy is paramount and hoping that with your help, we can be around for a good while longer.

We are hoping that our beloved patrons and supporters will look at this gallery as a bit more of a fundraising opportunity, and if you felt at the end of the day that you placed your highest bid, and as the clock takes down, even if no one else is bidding against you, perhaps just put on that little bit of additional love to really help assure that a gallery that has been a part of the New Contemporary Art Movement for the past 20 years can continue to shine brightly for as long as possible into the rather uncertain future that lay ahead.

Also represented in the collection are artists from outside the gallery. How do you find new artists and artworks?

This new offering of works from our collection includes a great array of artists from all over the world. We have always collected from the heart. Never trying to chase a particular name or add someone to the collection, based nearly on namesake, while not being focused on the image represented. The work itself always had to speak to one of us in some strong capacity. I have purchased works from everywhere from a secondhand store to someone set up on the boardwalk to some of the finest blue ship galleries on the planet.

If it resonated and connectwd with me, and could be afforded, more often than not it was purchased and added to the collection. Some of the more recognizable and sought after names include Barry McGee, Clare Rojas, Doze Green, Alfonso Gonzales Jr., Haroshi, Futura, Hebru Brantley and Luke Chueh, to name just a small sampling.

What do you see as the future of your collecting and the future of the gallery? How will the auction impact both?

I see this auction helping to provide the gallery with a little financial cushion to hopefully take care of the year ahead as we navigate the changes that are inevitably ahead of us. The future of my collecting is up in the air, as I am lucky enough to still have a small sampling of smaller scale works from a nice array of artists that I still hold very dear to my heart.

It is definitely a weird feeling to have not purchased anything in the past few years, but with letting go of so many marquee works in the last auction and with this new one, it seems a bit premature to be thinking about getting anything new, anytime soon. But with that said, I don’t see myself being able to ever stop completely, all together. Perhaps at a different level, and within a smaller budget, but I will always be supporting the arts and creatives I am friends with until I can no longer do so.
