Interview with realist painter Pritha Bhadra

Pritha Bhadra Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into her practice and experience as realist painter, as she responds to the questions below:

  • Art is a visual language what are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?
  • What is the most challenging part about creating art for you?
  • What role do you feel art and the artist have in today’s society?
  • Do you think beauty in art is important?

Art is a visual language what are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

Through my art, I want to highlight the simple yet profound beauty and emotions all around us—the little moments we often overlook. I want to share the stories and emotions tied to each subject, inviting viewers to connect with them on a deeper level. My hope is to take viewers on a journey of emotions and discovery, leaving them feeling inspired and connected to the world in a new way.

What is the most challenging part about creating art for you?

Like most artists, I run into challenges pretty often.

One thing I keep coming back to is dealing with creative blocks, especially when perfectionism gets in the way. There are times when a painting or drawing just doesn’t come together the way I imagined, and that can feel really frustrating. It’s not that I’m out of ideas—it’s more that I get stuck wondering if the final piece will actually live up to what I’ve pictured in my head.

But the funny thing is, the pieces I end up loving the most often come from just pushing through. When I let go of the pressure to make it perfect and allow myself to mess up a little, the process becomes way more honest—and a lot more fun.

What role do you feel art and the artist have in today’s society?

For me, art feels like a quiet offering in a noisy, fast, and impatient world. I mean—human attention spans today are said to be less than 8 seconds, which is actually shorter than that of a goldfish.

I was told that in order to make a captivating video for social media, you need to hook someone within the first 1 or 2 seconds—or they’ll just scroll past. That honestly feels a little unsettling to me – the fact that we don’t even give our brains two seconds before jumping to the next thing.

That’s exactly why I feel art, and my role as an artist, is to help people pause. To notice. To feel something real—without needing to jump around every moment. It’s about choosing to pay attention again.

We’re so used to numbing or rushing past emotion. Through my work, I want to invite people to slow down, to feel something they maybe didn’t even know they were missing.

Do you think beauty in art is important?

Throughout history, beauty has played a big role in art. In ancient Greece, artists focused on harmony and balance, and during the Renaissance, they paid close attention to fine details. For a long time, artists tried to capture an ideal form—something orderly and graceful that everyone could understand.

But as art changed, so did the idea of what beauty means. Styles like Romanticism, Impressionism, and Modernism showed us that beauty isn’t just about perfect shapes or smooth lines. It can be found in strong emotions, imperfections, and even things that feel a little unsettling. Artists started showing the real, complicated sides of life—not just the perfect parts.

Although I paint in the traditional realism style, to me, beauty in art is about honestly expressing a subject in the best way I can, so the viewer can feel what I feel. That honesty is what makes art pause-worthy and powerful. So yes, beauty matters in art—not just as something on the surface, but as a true reflection of the artist’s experience.
