S☉L (a play on “sol”, the Danish word for sun), marks a new evolution in Anne’s artistic practice in both scale and depth, delving deeper into her signature realm which we have all grown to love. Following the girl in the forest – a figure of consciousness throughout Anne’s roster of paintings – Anne has created a unified body of work which is both refreshingly unique, and yet also triggers innate feelings of nostalgia which have captured the hearts of collectors worldwide. In addition to featuring Anne’s largest paintings to date, S☉L also unveils a new, more surreal selection of ink drawings for the very first time. These drawings further meld the boundaries between creature, human and flora, both beautifully gentle and deeply raw. Anne also proudly unveils new sculptural works. Together, they create the perfect trilogy encapsulating Anne’s artistic expression, pushing the concept of true interconnectedness into the limelight with gentle grace.
S☉L has been created in collaboration with Galerie Wolfsen, which has worked closely with Anne Juul Christophersen for more than a decade.
Anne Juul Christophersen: the opening of S☉L
“The opening was honestly one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. I’m still a little overwhelmed by it all!”
Anne had been working on this exhibition for one year. Seeing the ideas that had been swimming around her head come to fruition has been a significant moment for Anne, and the experience of finally seeing these paintings and sculptures gracefully adorning Spritten has been more moving than she anticipated. “It was almost surreal,” she explains. “The exhibition covers approximately 657 square metres, and I had imagined how the works might interact with the architecture, but seeing it all come together in reality was something else entirely. My gallerist, Kent Wolfsen, and his wonderful team have done an extraordinary job. I couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful setting for my work.
“Seeing that enormous queue of people waiting to enter was almost impossible to take in. So many people had travelled to Aalborg to experience something I had spent so long creating in the quiet of my studio. I felt incredibly grateful, emotional and, to be honest, rather astonished!
“Kent later said: “It was the most magical day I have ever experienced as a gallery owner. Everything came together! In my 38 years as a gallerist, I have never experienced anything like it.”

The opening night was filled with an irrepressible magic in the air, the gentle bustling of the guests mixing with the enchanting live music by Anne’s friend, opera singer Jesper Buhl and his partner, Ida Hovalt Jensen. “We opened the doors at 11 am, and it was after 2 pm before I finally managed to get away for a little glass of water!” laughs Anne. “I talked and talked and talked! About the artworks, the stories behind them, the thoughts that inspired them – and of course, I listened to so many wonderful stories and reactions from the visitors too. There were familiar faces, dear friends, collectors and people I had never met before. And I was especially touched by the many different generations represented.”
“It was absolutely overwhelming, in the most wonderful way!”

.
There has been an extraordinary response to the exhibition as a whole, from the monumental paintings to the smaller, more intimate works. Anne smiles: “The response from collectors has been quite overwhelming. More than 30 works have already found new homes. But perhaps what touched me most was the emotional response from the visitors.
“Klaus Rask Mortensen, an experienced Danish gallerist who has been selling art for more than 30 years and joined Galerie Wolfsen to help at the opening, shared these wonderful words afterwards: “I have been selling art for more than 30 years, but that Saturday ranks among the top three days of my career! The venue and the art were a perfect match.
There were 200 – 250 people queuing to get in. People were crying tears of happiness because they had finally acquired the artwork they had dreamed of. Young and old, wealthy collectors and people who had saved up for their purchase – they were all there. The atmosphere was incredible, and everyone was delighted to be part of something truly extraordinary.”
He ended his reflection with something that touched me deeply, addressing both my gallerist, Kent Wolfsen, and me: “You dared to do what everyone else would have shaken their heads at. But together, you created something that everyone who attended will be talking about for many years to come.”
It’s clear that over a week later, Anne Juul Christophersen is still on an emotional and spiritual high from the opening event: “Perhaps the most moving thing for me was experiencing how S☉L seemed to become something much bigger than an exhibition of my own work. The central thought behind S☉L is that we are not separate from nature or from the universe. We are part of it, made of the same matter and connected in ways we don’t always stop to consider.
And standing there among so many people, surrounded by the works, I felt a very strong sense of that connection. It was as though something that had begun as a very personal artistic exploration had suddenly become a shared experience.”
S☉L will be on show at Spritten until 31 October, 2026. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of the magic and see this unique exhibition before it ends.
