Anne Juul Christophersen: S☉L
Hosting such a large and complex exhibition, Spritten in Aalborg is the perfect venue, making it possible for the works – including some very large-scale paintings and sculptures – to unfold perfectly in such a large space. Overall, the show will span more than 600 square meters, sharing Anne’s heartwarming world of larger-than-life paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
It is by far the largest exhibition I have ever created, both physically and in terms of the number of different media I am working with. At 200 x 350 cm, I can no longer stand outside the painting and control the whole image in the same way. I physically have to move through it. My entire body becomes involved in painting it, and I am constantly moving between tiny details and something I cannot fully see until I step far away.
During these past months, my studio has literally been overflowing with paintings, drawings, sculptures and experiments.
That change in scale has done something to the work – and to me.
S☉L (a play on “sol”, the Danish word for sun), marks a new evolution in Anne’s artistic practice in both scale and depth, delving deeper into her signature realm which we have all grown to love. Following the girl in the forest – a figure of consciousness throughout Anne’s roster of paintings – Anne has created a unified body of work which is both refreshingly unique, and yet also triggers innate feelings of nostalgia which have captured the hearts of collectors worldwide. S☉L has been created in collaboration with Galerie Wolfsen, which has worked closely with Anne Juul Christophersen for more than a decade.

An ancient symbol for the sun –
the place from which all life originates.
In S☉L, the familiar meets the more open.
Something we know what is –
and something we may only understand once we feel it.
The sun as the centre.
Not as something distant, but as something present in everything.
A point. A core –
a presence, a consciousness, a life force.
The circle surrounding it as the whole,
the visible and the invisible, that which unfolds.
Together, they point towards something fundamental:
That what appears separate has a common origin.
That everything carries the same essence within it.
That life does not begin in one place and end in another,
but continually arises from the same source, again and again.
From her 100-square-meter studio, Anne has been working on this show for almost a year, though the concepts behind it have been building for much longer. In recent years her practice has evolved beyond paintings and drawing to also include bronze sculptures and even prose. By moving into bronze sculptures, Anne has further elevated the depths of her world: figures that have existed for years in the two-dimensional world have become physical beings in the same space as us. “Suddenly, you don’t only look into their world. In a strange way, they have stepped into ours.” Anne muses.
The studio, connected to the farmland on which she lives with her husband, is surrounded by flat marshland and the wild soundscape of nature. Striking sunsets silhouette ancient trees and birds flock across the vast, open skies. Living in such an area, it’s not surprising to see how Anne’s artistic practice is fundamentally interlinked with the concept of “one whole”. Her work reminds us of a truth that many people have forgotten: that there is an interconnectedness in which humans, nature, animals, time and place are not separate entities, but merely different manifestations of the same underlying reality.
But what, exactly, does that mean? At the heart of it, Anne’s works “revolve around the experience that existence emerges from a shared source – a continuous, invisible dimension that manifests itself throughout all living things. A form of inherent consciousness or life principle that is not confined to the individual being, but flows through everything.” She explains. From this understanding, it is clear to see how she has dissolved the modern philosophy of humans somehow existing separate from nature.
We are not the other. We are all a part of the one whole: a part of the eternal interconnectedness.

In addition to featuring Anne’s largest paintings to date, S☉L also unveils a new, more surreal selection of ink drawings for the very first time. These drawings further meld the boundaries between creature, human and flora, both beautifully gentle and deeply raw. Moving into a looser and more instinctive style, it is difficult to see where one ends and the other begins – and through these drawings, Anne pushes the concept of interconnectedness into an entirely new realm.
“These ink drawings came very naturally, but they also surprised me.” Shares Anne. “For many years, the girl, the bear, the animals and nature have existed together in my work, but they have still had recognisable boundaries. A girl is a girl. A bear is a bear. A tree is a tree. In these new drawings, those boundaries have begun to dissolve. Human, animal and plant life grow into one another. Bodies transform, merge and continue into other forms. Sometimes it becomes difficult to tell where one being ends and another begins.
“And I think that is very closely connected to what S☉L is about.
If everything arises from the same fundamental source, perhaps the boundaries we place between ourselves and the rest of the living world are not quite as absolute as we imagine them to be.”

The recurring figure – the girl – functions as a figure of consciousness. She moves through time and place, embodying a state in which relationship is a fundamental condition of existence. Her presence points towards a form of awareness in which being is experienced without distance.
The animals do not function as symbols, but as fellow beings emerging from the same source. They appear alongside the human figure as expressions of the same life force and the same origin.
Materially, the practice unfolds across drawing, painting and sculpture. Drawing carries a concentrated attentiveness; sculpture anchors experience in body and matter; while painting opens space, allowing it to be permeated by light and movement. Together, the different media function as parallel manifestations of one unified investigation.
Anne Juul Christophersen’s works inhabit a field in which the sensory and the metaphysical are not separated, but emerge as mutually dependent dimensions of the same reality.
