Interview with magical realist painter Severine Pineaux

Severine Pineaux, Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into her practice and experience as magical realist painter, as she responds to the questions below:

  • How do you respond to criticism, and does it influence your future work?
  • With the move to more online exhibitions, what role do physical galleries have in the arts going forward?
  • If you had unlimited resources, what would you do to further your art career?
  • How does your work reflect as you an individual?

How do you respond to criticism, and does it influence your future work?

I don’t get much criticism, and people who don’t like my work go their own way without talking to me. On the other hand, if someone close to me makes a remark, I always modify it: if someone is bothered by anything in an image, it’s because there’s a problem, and criticism from family or friends is not malicious. In fact, I’m my own fiercest critic: you have to be ruthless with your work, and doubt, if mastered, is a powerful motor for progress.

With the move to more online exhibitions, what role do physical galleries have in the arts going forward?

There are pitfalls with online exhibitions: images are always brighter on screen, the screen does not reflect the format, the size of an image is important for its impact: the fascination of the miniature as the power of the large format.

Finally, I’m a painter who believes in the transfer of energy between the artist, the original work and its viewer, and for this to happen, an encounter in the real world is essential. Virtual galleries open up the world, but it takes a real encounter to fall in love with a work.

If you had unlimited resources, what would you do to further your art career?

Unlimited resources would be a factor of absolute creative freedom, but I think what I’d prefer would be to open a place for my artistic family that wouldn’t depend on profitability but just on the exchange between creators and that would become an artistic egregore.

How does your work reflect as you an individual?

I think that my work as a painter is a reflection of my soul, of my being. That’s why I try to remain perfectly honest in what I paint, forgetting about fashion, trends or competition. It’s a spiritual process that I can’t quite explain to myself. To earn a living, there are lighter works, commissions, illustrations where I use the craft I’ve acquired. The impulse that drives me to create images according to my inspiration must remain for me with no stake other than the art itself.
