Interview with Kristen Eisenbraun, figurative painter

Kristen Eisenbraun, Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory member provides some fascinating insights into her practice and experience as figurative painter, as she responds to the questions below:

  • What does success as an artist look like for you personally?
  • How do you silence your inner critic?
  • What are the things you wish you knew when you started out?
  • Do you think art can help people connect to vital issue about our world?

What does success as an artist look like for you personally?

The greatest feeling for me as an artist is watching my work bring joy to other people. Success to me is having my paintings out in the world hanging in homes and public spaces where they can be seen and appreciated.

How do you silence your inner critic?

I think we have an inner critic for a reason as artists. I don’t try to silence mine even if it’s telling me to start a painting over again. I think it’s there to help us improve and push ourselves to be the best that we can, although it does make me want to throw my paintings out the window sometimes. In the end I hope it helps me work my hardest and make my best art.

What are the things you wish you knew when you started out?

I am still trying to figure it out. I think it would’ve been useful if I knew from the beginning how important it is to have a cohesive body of work. I really like to paint all over the place.  It’s fun that way! But having work that follows in a series is great for being recognized.

Do you think art can help people connect to vital issue about our world?

Absolutely! Art can provoke so much feeling in people. I think what we take away from that moment of looking at a specific piece is not obvious but I do think it makes a subconscious impact on people. That subconscious impact might just help people to feel like they really can make a difference.
