How did you find and develop your personal aesthetic?
It took me many years to develop my personal artistic aesthetic. I pursued my interests and obsessions mercilessly and worked hard to improve my skills to match the images I conjured in my mind.
How has social media changed your practice? Do you include less nudity in your work now to fit their censorship standards?
In many ways social media has helped me connect with other artists, collectors and galleries that I am very grateful for. However, I have begun avoiding nudity because of the draconian limits that are put on artists on these platforms.
What obstacles have you encountered as an artist, and how did you overcome them?
I had a lot of trouble finding the right people to help teach me sound methods in traditional painting. There is a lot of misinformation out there, but my best teachers were books, workshops and mentors.
Also, it’s quite hard to stay positive and not have doubts as an artist. I like to remind myself that the outcomes aren’t everything. No matter what, I will continue to paint because that’s what I do.
How do you market yourself and your art to gain recognition from galleries and collectors?
I am not particularly skilled with marketing myself, however I have been persistent and persevered for many years as well as attending openings and being involved in the community. I believe making human connections and being professional as an artist goes a long way to gaining recognition from the people you want to work with.
