About the Gallery //
Haven Gallery is run by Erica Berkowitz and Joseph Weinreb. The gallery first opened in 2015 in the Carriage House of historic Northport, NY. Within two years, the gallery doubled in size and expanded into the entire Carriage House building. Through their successful in-house exhibitions and presentations at art fairs both domestic and international, Haven opened a secondary location at 90 Main St., in 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic.
It was at that point, that Erica and Joseph knew it was time to find a permanent location for their artists. In January of 2022, they bought the building at 50 Main st., and opened its doors as Haven Gallery’s perennial home.
Haven Gallery’s focus is on exhibiting emotionally, intellectually and imaginatively driven, representational artwork that connects the audience and artist with universal axioms and passions. We work with both emerging and established artists who transcend their medium and subjects by exploring the world around them as well as the one within themselves.
Stephanie Law, Liminal
Press // Northport, NY– Haven Gallery is pleased to present “Liminal”, a solo exhibition of new work by California based artist Stephanie Law. “Liminal” is Law’s fourth solo show with the gallery and will include twenty five new watercolor paintings that blend the echelons of land, sea and sky. Cascades of water, air and earth harmoniously dance with color, and fluidity, illuminating the magic of life. Beings both corporeal yet ethereal, natural yet mythical, move to blended landscapes, creating their own ripples of reality.
Stephanie Law’s work is an exploration of mythology mixed with her personal symbolism. Her art journeys through surreal otherworlds, populated by dreamlike figures, masked creatures, and winged shadows. The fantastical permeates through the visions with a promise that this is a world that underlies reality, when viewed with a desire for beauty and a shifted perception.
Archetypes, the basis for the universal appeal of mythological concepts, are one of the defining inspirations for her imagery. This is mingled with the movement of dance. Stephanie has been a dancer for almost two decades, and she uses that experience of how the human body moves and emotes to create a bridge into her artwork so that not only do the humans dance across the page, but the branches of her trees move with a sinuous grace, and the arrangement of inanimate elements has a choreographed rhythm and flow.
Growing up in California, Stephanie has been surrounded by the wealth of natural inspiration all around her. The twisting boughs of live oaks from the hills near her home insinuate themselves into her paintings. The chaos of Nature’s wild growth, and conversely the beauty of decay, echo in the textures and fractal patterns of her work.
She currently showcases her personal work in group and solo exhibitions at galleries in New York, San Francisco, Nashville, and San Diego, while continuing to publish book collections of her art via Shadowscapes Press. The most recent volume is Descants and Cadences. Her work has also been included in the Spectrum annual of fantastic art in for several years, and at the Spectrum showcase in September 2014 at the Society of Illustrators in NY. Her botanical art has been showcased in internationally juried exhibitions at botanical gardens and arboretums. Recent work features insects, imaginative plants, and fae creatures, interwoven into a miniature world that is often overlooked, when size and physical permanence is equated with importance.
Alexis Savopoulos, A Garden of Spirits
Press // Northport, NY– Haven Gallery is pleased to present “A Garden of Spirits”, a solo exhibition of new work by California based artist Alexis Savopuolous. “A Garden of Spirits” is Savopoulos’ third solo show with the gallery and will include both paintings and sculptures representing the cycle of life. Glass shadow boxes, tea cups and vintage Florentine plaques are some of the timeless canvases for the artist as she hand sculpts animals and flowers and embeds them into these tangible worlds. Glow in the dark elements are added to further embrace the cycle, using motifs of dark and light. A reminder that life always will always break through even the darkest and seemingly most final of moments.
Alexis Savopoulos is a California based artist. She has been sculpting, painting, and jewelry making since 2012. She has shown with Haven Gallery since 2018 and has been featured at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona as part of their “Flora and Fauna” exhibit.
Nicole Grosjean, Grand Carousel Menagerie
Press // Northport, NY– Haven Gallery is pleased to present new work from Colorado based paper illustrator Nicole Grosjean for her mini solo show “Grand Carousel Menagerie”. “Grand Carousel Menagerie” is the artists second show at the gallery and features six meticulous, laser cut and layered collage works focusing on the enchantment and technical splendor of the carousel. Evolving further, Grosjean explores animals beyond the horse, as she handpaints and engineers a polar bear, tiger, elephant, camel, giraffe, and mountain goat. Nostalgic yet mythological, the carousel represents historical and modern innovations of movement and amusement, and call for the multifaceted splendor and innovation Grosjean is known for achieving through her layered works.
I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with a passion for art and nature. My mother, a sign artist, instilled a deep love of craftsmanship and painting that drove me to an artistic career.
I graduated with a BFA in illustration from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Denver, Colorado in 2008. Originally working in digital mediums, I began investigating more traditional watercolor and gouache painting several years ago. I liked the freedom of working with ‘layers’ in Photoshop illustration and endeavored to carry that through to the more traditional mediums.
All of my paper illustrations are hand-painted in watercolor and gouache and are occasionally accented in 24k gold or 21k white gold. Each design is laser-cut and layered to create various depths depending on the size of the piece.
