@kehindewiley is known for his iconic portraits of African-American and African-Diasporic individuals. The painter aims to challenge conventions of European and American traditional portraiture by the choice of his subjects but as well with his composition: Kehinde blends back- and foreground and negates hereby the hierarchy between different layers within a composition. This technical approach translates as well on another level: By blurring boundaries between traditional and contemporary portraiture, the artist gives his subjects the appearance of icons and challenges modes of representation.
