"One of the many facts of life is that we only see small parts of other people. Sometimes, those are the only parts they want us to see. As a result, our perceptions of others are often based on reflections of our own experiences or, in some cases, our lack of experiences."
Artist @calidagarciarawles shares further in the caption of her acrylic painting 'On the Other Side of Everything': "I feel blessed to have such beautiful, gentle and strong Black men in my life. When I see any Black man walk down the street, I can't help but be reminded of a friend or a cousin, my son, my father, my brother or even my loving husband. It's that beauty, the love and a touch of mystery that I wanted to capture with these paintings (...)."
Calida exhibited the series last year September at @lehmannmaupin in New York.

Why is this beautiful bird - which was once a very 'common' species in Australia - so precariously perched amid the showy cosmic splendor of the Prawn Nebula?
Tracie MacVean's (@traciemacveanartwork) critically endangered red-tailed black cockatoo clearly doesn't belong in an environment where a swirling emission nebula thrives...and that's the whole point!
Human-driven behaviors - such as habitat destruction, fires, vehicle strikes and even the exotic pet trade - have contributed to their dramatically diminished population🥺
If art really DOES inspire action, maybe some of us will consider the deeper message in Tracie's painting and find out what we can personally do to take the heat off imperiled creatures such as cockatoos (or the many other species need extra TLC).
