Polish born, Queens, NY based painter Zofia Bogusz seems to be creating symbols of Gaia in her most recent series, CARBON. Powerful females peer from plumes of smoke and ash to look over the constant upheaval of the earth occurring around them. The emotion on their faces are delicate yet subtly express mixed feelings of desperation, longing, empathy, and hope. These figures striking through rugged mountains, flame, and water are indicative of the Earth’s violent growth and creation over millennials. Zofia compares it to the growth of women in our society. Silent observers with internal struggles who fight for visual and personal perfection.

On hand-cut wood panels Zofia’s oil paintings begin with a desaturated pallet of grey shades. Faint hints of color seductively enhance the images’ aesthetic. The emerging hues express a dichotomy of two different worlds existing in the same plane. With this, Zofia plants the discussion in a viewers mind of Earth’s energy and how one’s morality connects with it all.
