There are artists more haunting than others, regardless of the medium they use. Heather McLean has first used the most unconventional of them all: skin. Indeed, the Canadian artist started tattooing in 1999, being the only female tattoo artist in Alberta’s area for a while. She developed her own aesthetic, experimenting with neo-traditional tattoo style, with influences of fantasy and Asian culture. After winning several awards for her skin art, Heather decided to devote her life to motherhood, but most importantly, to painting and illustration. A young retired person, she built her years of art studies in Canada and Amsterdam, to unleash her fascinating visual universe. Interested in biology, and being an expert of skin, she decided to continue her exploration deeper so to reach the soul inside and outside of the body.
Her dark art is tinged with powerful concepts such as quantum mechanics, cognitive sciences, astrophysics and Advaitic Hinduism. Her creations illustrate the spiritual connection between flesh and the universe, inviting the beholder to a fantasy world of macabre poetry. The art of Heather McLean is either made of intricate esoteric paintings or of intense, yet subtle, surrealistic illustrations. Both are enthralling ways of communication for the artist, translating her observation of humanity through fine art. You will certainly have the art of Heather McLean (also known as H Bomb) under the skin as soon as you would have discovered it, as well as in your soul…
