Thomas Dodd is what some may call a new-age artist: part painter, part photographer. Yet as modern as his methods may be, what you’ll soon discover after dipping your toes in his illusory world of whim is that modern has nothing to do with it. This is a place where primordial fervor, silent sorrow, and female sovereignty dominate. Every step you take, oozing with mythical elegance, will steal you beyond the arcane, silent hallways of your subconscious, and leave you dangling – threadbare and hollow – yet hungry for more.
In an interview with Deanna Elaine Piowaty in 2014, Dodd explains that he has “always been fascinated with myths and fairytales…because they elicit such a strong response from the subconscious mind and at their core they deal with archetypal forces and facets of human nature we all share.”
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it’s surprising to learn that Dodd has been only been in the trade of photography and digital manipulation for the past 10 years. Before becoming a professional artist, he was a songwriter and harpist for a Celtic Gothic ensemble – something you realize is well suited to his later artworks. Not one to ‘keep secrets’, his website extends the opportunity for artists interested in this style of work to craft their own style of post-production, which is definitely worth checking out. Here, he also offers tips for artists who are looking to make a living from their creations.
For those interested in taking a closer look into his fascinating fantasy world, Dodd’s will be participating in the 13th Annual Seattle Erotic Art Festival, held April 23 – 25, 2015 downtown at the Seattle Center’s Exhibition(ist) Hall, as well as the Art Expo New York April 23 – 26, 2015 in New York City.
