Our loyal (and lucky!) readers may already know the work of Jennybird Alcantara, thanks to a feature in our December 2013 issue. But if the work of this young painter is undiscovered for you yet, there is just one door to push to enter a secret fantasy world.
Graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, the Californian artist is one of those explorers of the infinite possibilities of neo surrealism. Obsessed by Nature, Jennybird is questioning the animal instinct inside each of us, including herself: animals are inside her name (bird), inside her skin (tattoos) and indeed, inside her prolific and impressive portfolio. The painter doesn’t limit herself to one kind of media as she masters both oil paint, acrylic and seaming, creating one-of-a-kind paintings, illustrations and dolls made of wool, paper and collected objects. All of her creations have one thing in common: an offbeat sense of magic. Inspired both by fairy tales, fables, dreams, tattoo art and Fine Arts with mythological and religious borrowings, each story narrated in her work is a feast for the eyes. Intricate, with many levels of understanding (not to say feeling) and symbols, the creations of Jennybird Alcantara are exploring the many dualities inherent to Nature. Beauty cohabiting with cruelty, life with death, light with darkness, and, more importantly, mankind with the animal kingdom. Thus, her heroines are all anthropomorphic, mixing elements of human eroticism, mystic animality and fantasy; hybrids meeting the identity’s intertwinings of the artist herself. Unique and out of the box, Jennybird Alcantara doesn’t follow any trend or any search for fame. This secret artist is keeping the key to her fantastic world, only giving us hints through her awaited new art… Already addicted? Follow her on her website and social networks.
