Currently showing at Corvidae Collective Gallery & Boutique until 31 January 2015 is the group exhibition ‘Sol Invictus’ celebrating the rebirth of the sun.
The ancient Roman’s marked the 25th of December with a festival of lights, Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, or “Rebirth of the Unconquered Sun”, which celebrated the lengthening of days and the sun’s re-ascension to the zenith following the darkness of winter. An important rite that helped mankind mark the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the longest night which heralds the onset of winter also promises the gradual return of the sun after a prolonged period of darkness, offering hope and the opportunity for new beginnings. In keeping, the ‘Sol Invictus’ exhibition is a celebration of the things that make each of us bring our own light into the darkest days.
“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” – Albert Camus
