Welcome into a dark universe, half way between eerie smoke specters and scratch-boards for adults, born from the creative mind of prolific Parisian digital artist Nicolas Obery.
At the peak of a successful career as artistic director in the luxury field, Nicolas began an ambitious project – “Fantasmagorik”, a series of more than two hundred digital paintings. Wittily mixing pop culture references and icons (Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, etc) and tributes to surrealist artists such Salvador Dali, Magritte and even Renaissance painter Arcimboldo, Nicolas composes intricate portraits using Photoshop, almost sculpting images with the help of various elements previously collected.
His complex compositions remind of the work of Kris Kuksi, which he quotes as an inspiration. His outlandish pallid faces also display borrowings to bondage, religion, steam-punk and Mexican day of the dead themes. A real pleasure for the eyes and mind that leads the beholder to a world of fantasy, sensuality and humor.
